Rule question

Thanks for the reply Bretman. I was a catcher back in the day and I knew the answer, but I wanted it out in public from a reliable source. When this situation occurred and the umpire told our team that he was reversing the call, I said that the ball did not go straight into the catchers mitt so it should not be deemed a foul tip. The other team's coach said that the ball had to go up three feet in order for it to be a foul ball. I said it most certainly did not and the coaches reply to me was "I played college ball....how much ball have you played?" My answer was "Plenty...probably more than you." She shook her head and walked away happy with the umpire's decision. Lucky for us the call did not determine the outcome of the game.

If caught, batters out and live ball runners may advance at own risk. Uncaught, its a foul ball, and batter is still alive.

Thanks for trying to be helpful, but a foul tip is always caught by definition and by rule it is a strike, not an out.

I was just presenting a case where a strike that contacted the bat didn't fit Bretman's guidelines of caught/uncaught strikes.
