BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC – After sweeping the Bryan College Lions on Friday, the Montreat Cavaliers' softball team returned to the field against Stratford University late Saturday morning, with a second game slotted for the evening against Cincinnati Christian University. The games were part of the Montreat College Classic hosted by the Cavaliers at Black Mountain's Roxy Hines Field.

The Cavaliers (7-11, 3-1) handily won the first game, 11-0, against the Stratford Cardinals of the USCAA. Abby Swilley (SO/Riceville, TN) had a double and a home run against the Cardinals (0-11) in a game that was shortened to five innings due to the run differential. The first baseman had four RBIs in the contest. Allison Moody (SO/Belmont, NC) went 3-3 for the Cavaliers, and Mikki Shelton (SO/Old Fort, NC) and Cailin Warner (SO/Portland, OR) each drove in two runs for Montreat.

Swilley also registered the win for the Cavaliers on the mound, pitching four innings and striking out two while allowing just two hits. The righthander notched her first win of the season and is now 1-1.

In the nightcap, Cavaliers faced the NAIA's CCU Eagles (5-6) and sent Danyelle Joli (FR/Battle Ground, WA) to the mound. The freshman from Washington state pitched well, going 5.1 innings before yielding to Cailin Warner in relief.

At the plate, Victoria Hill (JR/Beaufort, SC), Swilley, Warner (2), and Aly Woody (SO/Marion, NC) all doubled for the Cavaliers, but they saw a six-run lead erode away as the Eagles tied the score in the top of the seventh inning.

Montreat went scoreless in the bottom half of the inning but the Cavaliers broke through in the bottom of the eighth when Mikki Shelton grounded to Eagles' shortstop Haley Coffey. With Montreat's Victoria Hill on third and one out, Coffey threw home to prevent Hill from scoring. Shelton then broke toward second on the throw home, drawing a return throw from the CCU catcher and sending Hill in to score the winning run.

Warner struck out four in two and 2/3 innings of work to earn the save, while Joli earned the victory. The Cavs played well defensively, with third baseman Kelsey Nolasco and catcher Alicia Gil both turning in stellar plays on infield fly balls against the Eagles.
