On Thursday morning, the Montreat Cavaliers' softball team proved they had a short memory and could turn around quickly as they defeated Milligan, 4-3, to stave off elimination while in turn eliminating the Buffs (22-19) from the 2018 AAC Tournament. The day before, the Cavaliers dropped their tournament opener to the top-seeded TMU Bears, 8-4.

In their previous two games against Milligan this season, the Cavaliers (17-31) came up short, but on Thursday proved again that they can compete with, and defeat, any team they face.

Cailin Warner (SO/Portland, OR) notched the complete-game victory on the mound for Montreat and struck out nine in the process. It was the second time this season the righty has struck out nine betters, and the most since she also struck out nine Reinhardt Eagles on April 5.

Catcher Ashlyn Vickers (JR/Ellenboro, NC) framed Warner's pitchers exceptionally well throughout the game and also drove in two runs at the plate for Montreat. Alicia Gil (JR/Phoenix, AZ) played a strong game at third and also had an RBI for the Cavaliers.

Abby Swilley (SO/Riceville, TN) had two hits and an RBI for the Cavaliers on Thursday. The left-handed hitting Swilley continues to show the ability to drive fastballs to leftfield with authority, while also driving in runs in the process.

The play of the game came in the field for the Cavaliers, who took a one-run lead into the seventh against Milligan. The Buffs sent pinch-hitter Jaclyn Jenkins to the plate to lead off the inning. The left-handed hitting Jenkins pulled an offering from Warner down the rightfield line. Right- fielder Liana Elliot made a perfect break on the ball, snagging it in stride while running away from home plate. For some baseball fans watching, it was reminiscent of "The Catch" made by Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series against Cleveland. It also robbed Jenkins of at least a triple.

From there, Warner retired the next two Milligan batters as the right-hander notched her sixth win of the season, while keeping the Cavaliers alive in the tournament.
