[Softball] No. 2 Drovers Stay Perfect with Weekend Sweep

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – The No. 2 University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma improved their record to 13-0 as they picked up four more wins in Texas. The Drovers have won 18 straight games, dating back to May 5, 2018. On Friday the defending champs picked up an 11-4 victory over Ottawa University (7-6, 0-0 KCAC) and a 10-1 win over Bethel College (1-5, 0-0 KCAC). On Sunday, USAO earned the 8-0 shutout-win against York College (0-10, 0-0 KCAC).

GAME 1

The Drovers jumped out to an early lead as they pushed four runs across in the top of the first inning against Ottawa. USAO extended the lead to 5-0 in the top of the second inning, but OU cut the lead to just 5-2 in the bottom half of the inning. The Braves cut the deficit to one run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Drovers answered with a pair of runs in the sixth, and four more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Emily Cerny (SO/Newcastle, OK) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings and struck out 7 batters. Lyndie Ervin (FR/Washington, OK) pitched 3.2 innings in the win.

Karlie Velasco (SR/Del City, OK) had a big game at the plate as she went 3-4 with a run scored, a run batted in, and she stole a base. Tarah Madron (JR/Konawa, OK) finished the game 2-3 with a double, run scored, and drove in 2 runs. Karmyn Pearn (SO/Newcastle, OK) contributed a 2-3 performance that included a solo homer, a stolen base, and 2 runs scored. Destinie Lookout (SR/Oklahoma City, OK) added 2 hits in the win, while Kindle Nelms (SO/Newcastle, OK) hit a 3-run homer in her only at bat of the game. Rhylee Vandiver (SO/Newcastle, OK) and Alyson Clemence (SO/Washington, OK) each added one hit and a run scored.

GAME 2

USAO took an early lead as they scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Bethel scored their only run of the game in the top of the second inning. The Drovers offense exploded for 5 runs in the bottom half of the second and then added a pair of runs in the third. With the score 10-1 in the fifth inning, the game was called due to run-rule.

Randa Hatter (JR/Stratford, Okla.) pitched 5 shutout innings for the Drovers and she struck out 3 batters in the win. Hatter also made an impact on offense as she went 1-2 with a homer, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI's. Karlie Velasco picked up her second straight 3-4 performance, and she added 2 runs scored. Brooke Rains (JR/Washington, OK) finished the game 2-3 with 3 RBI's. Darci Chester (SO/Collinsville, OK) also finished 2-3 and she added a run scored along with a run batted in. Destintie Lookout concluded with a 2-3 outing, along with two runs scored and a RBI. Tarah Madron went a perfect 1-1 at the plate and she drove in 2 runs. Keely Kingsly (SR/Oklahoma City, OK) and Dakota Clouse (SR/Blancahard, OK) each concluded with a hit in the win.

GAME 3

The Drovers took an early lead as they scored once in the bottom of the first inning. USAO added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning, and pushed across one more run in the fifth. The defending champions put the game out of reach in the sixth as they scored four more runs to pick up the 8-0 shutout victory.

The Drovers have scored the fourth most runs in the NAIA (120), have the fourth most hits (145), and their pitching ranks in the top 30 in team earned run average. USAO Has outscored their opponents 120-32 through the first 13 games of the season.

The Drovers will be back in action on Tuesday, March 5 when they host Langston University at 4 and 6 PM.
