I wonder why the video code didn't work for embedded Video(s). Was able to find the fix and will update all section inside the forum.

Video has been removed, no need for the video since the thread is now closed.

Thanks Admin

If my kid was being coached in that way? I remove my kid from the team. No class or integrity. It wouldn't matter their record was 40-0. But that's just me.

Not a fan of the tactic. Hopefully, it was a Budweiser moment and coaches were betting a pizza on if they could pull it off.
In support of the girls, the batter executed the coached instructions and successfully advanced thw runner while remaining alive in the count. More important, the Catcher kept her poise throughout the play to make a great throw... as she was Coached.

That is interference on the batter. Should have been a dead ball, batter out, runner returned to 1st.

Absolutely correct.

- The parents need to have a talk with the coach. I wouldn't want someone teaching that to my kid.

- I also wouldn't be surprised if the next pitch was in the batter's ribcage...

I could maybe see where a coach says in that situation you need to protect the runner, put the bat out in the strike zone to not give the catcher a clear throwing lane and in the moment she went too far with it.

I have nothing lol.

OK the more I watch it the worse it is.... The bat is actually in her face as the ball is coming at her. So what happens if she takes one in the throat...or breaks a finger? So so bad on so many levels! Especially the timing of it.

Much better ways to acomplish this without looking so blatant-bush league. Show early bunt, bat at catchers eye level, follow the ball through the zone covering catchers point of view as long as possible. Also, crowd the plate and back up in the box to make as long a throw as possible and using as much of the legal batters box as possible to squeeze the window.

Does appear to be a "coached" movement though.

However, I dont think its illegal unless you make contact with the catcher or hold it out long enough to interfere with the catcher making the throw or moving forword. The bat seems to be in the zone only before the catcher has it.?

You don't need to make contact for it to be interference. What if there was a runner on a base who intentionally puts her hand in front of the defensive player's eyes so she can't see the throw coming?

Same idea - same call. Interference.

I'm guessing a coach who uses these tactics doesn't have what it takes to get to the Finals.

I hear ya but it looks like Spano 10u and it's the only game playing. My vision is bad and the video a bit blurry for me to make out.

Was that the Championship game?

Yes it was. that is my DD catching and win or lose I am looking out for the safety of my kid who is 10 and let me tell you that is not safe to try to catch a ball with the bat pretty much touching your mask. Mad to say the least!

If it is an obvious attempt to block the catchers view of the ball, this would also be interference.

I disagree, in my example not in the video, the batter has a right to the zone as the ball is coming through it. Same reason its catchers intereference if she contacts the bat when swung through the zone. Catcher has to be able to track a ball with a bat in the zone, sorta the point. Turning around and placing the bat in her face is a whole different thing, I would have called the batter out and warned the coach.

But, I would say its most likely gonna be a judgment call by blue if its interference.

Any umps out there want to comment on how they would call it?

As a parent of a child on the batting team and the mother of a catcher I am completely upset by this action and do not condone it one bit. My daughter ever does it she will be yanked from the game immediately! !

What I said did not come out the way I wanted. What I wanted to say is, is the safety of a 10 year old worth a win? not to me its not!

This was not a good situation at all. LOVE the kid behind the plate and don't ever want to see something bad happen to her or any kid as a result of a tactic like this. Argument might be made that the kid misinterpreted coach's direction, but there was no correction of this "misinterpretation" at the time by the coaches, so not sure how genuine this rings to me.

I am an Ump. Call me Bluuuuuuue.

Rule 2-32 "Interference is an act (physical or verbal) by a member of the team at bat who illegally impedes, hinders, or confuses any fielder....."

Dead ball. Interference. Batter is out. Young lady, back to first base.

By your own admission this is a tactic you teach to block the catchers view as long as possible. Swinging at a ball and dragging the bat back into the catchers face are two completely different things. It is an attempt to interfere with the catcher and can be judged as interference. If I see it, it is going to get called. And yes, I am an umpire.
