OK, some of you know that my dd is a catcher, so take it with a grain of salt.

The position of catcher is the toughest on the field.
First off, they have to understand the game. They are the field general. They keep the team in the game, and direct traffic. They have to keep their pitcher calm when things aren't goin their way.
They have to wear full protective gear. Try doing this in 90 degree heat for 4 or 5 games on a Sunday.
They have to stand in a crouch position for a major portion of the game.
They have to block pitches in the dirt, chase down the ones that get away, and still try to throw a girl out at 2nd or 3rd.
They're the last defense against a run scoring against their team.
If given the opportunity to call their own game, they need to know what pitches to throw to what batters and on what count.
They're expected to throw girls out at 2nd or 3rd who can run like the wind.

I think the hardest position to be in, is that person who ends up being the child psychologist/treasurer/family counselor/wardrobe dept/trip planner for tourneys/the guy that you either love or hate--------Head Coach. Oh, you meant players, IMO, catcher then pitcher then SS.

Just playin around

I would have to say catcher, for the reason wgman listed, but I would have to give as much credit to the team's pitchers for the amount of time they have to put into practice outside the game. They definitely work their butts off. After that shortstop, followed by centerfield. All positions are tough for one reason or another which is why you have people with different skills at each position.

Catcher, pitcher, SS then Center......and of course the frustrated mom on the bleachers wanting to give advice to their dd...but we don't, for we will get the "look of death" with the rolling eyes!! Come on, we have all seen it!!

I agree with wgman21 on his reasons for catcher and I will throw one more out there. In my opinion it is also the toughest position to fill with a quality player. Pitcher and shortstop are important and tough positions but there are always girls lining up for those positions. You are bound to find a few good ones. Finding a girl who wants to be a catcher and has the heart and desire to do it game after game is tough to find.

The hardest position on the field is wherever the coach's dd is at the moment. Then catcher....lol

Toughest physically during actual game play? I'd give the nod to catchers. Toughest mentally during a game? I'd say pitcher.

The truth is that the hours upon hours of practice that PROFICIENT pitchers must put in is invisible to everyone else. It's been said that the pitcher is usually the best athlete on the field, but simply being an athlete won't make you a pitcher. It's all the "behind the scenes" work that makes the pitching performance you see in games. If coaches could get every kid on their teams to work as hard and smart as the good pitchers do off the field, you'd see some killer midwest teams!

Rarely will you find a position player work as hard AT HOME as a pitcher. When they do, it's obvious in their game performance. Another overlooked "position" is great hitters. Becoming a great hitter doesn't just happen - it takes lots of work - again, work that is invisible to everyone else. Spectators don't see the hours put in over the winter and off-season (if there is such a thing).

Mentally-pitcher, Mentally and physically-catcher, other than those 2 positions-SS, most coverages and has to have best range. Although I do agree with the Dice man!!

I have to agree with Catcher, then Pitcher and Shortstop. Catcher is also the most thankless, invisible position. How often do you see the MVP ribbon at the tournaments going to the Catcher?

The toughest positions to play are as follows;

Catcher when the pitchers throws everypitch in the dirt or one 2 ft out the zone on a 0-2 count.

Pitcher when you are being jacked out of the ballpark every pitch, or the Umpire is calling a coffee cup zone down the middle.

1B when nobody can throw the ball to you.

2B when the short game is on and nobady can throw the ball to you.

3B when the short game is never ending on the middle 1B side

SS is never tough, unless your pitcher is letting pull hitters rip blazers at you all day

OF when no one hits a grass shot all day and its 103 degrees outside. or when the Cumberland Gap takes on a new meaning.

Book - when your being rule ruled

Coach - when you are looking for the team you brought to the game that day but the body snatchers have replaced them, with emotionless aliens clones

Parent -when writing checks for bats, gloves, cleats and fees.

Johnnies hit it on the head.
1. Pitcher
2. Catcher
3. Short stop, If you don't know why you have not played elite softball. Teams with slappers and can steal you blind. She must be the fastest kid on the team, and have a cannon for an arm..
4,. 3B, same as above , but you don't need the speed. Ask Big Train what the West coasts team will do to you at Third. They will small ball you to death, if you are weak and it doesn't matter how good your pitcher is. He has Abbey as a pitcher one of the best!

Agree with wgman21
This position along with what wgman posted is the toughest on the body. Plenty of knee problems can go with being a catcher long after they quit playing that position.

When at the Ohio State clinic, Coach K seperated the players and said "OK, all the "workhorses" on this side and all the "princesses" over here.
Workhorses were catchers and of coarse the princesses were the pitchers.;&

totally agree.....but would like to add on more....catchers never get any recognition....the toughest job on the field and the pitcher is always praised for what a good game she had.....i think everyone should have to catch at least once to see how hard it is to catch......then they can come back to me and decide wether or not i deserve any recognition.....just my 2 cents:)
