As the father of a first year catcher I can tell you this, both pitching and catching are A LOT harder on the parents. If your DD just plays infield or outfield, count your blessings and your dollars because you have it good. :lmao:

:lmao: I will 2nd that Amen!
2 Gloves, Gear, pain, keep her cool, extra wash clothes, extra cooler stocked. The bruises even with the gear on?
Can I just say for the record, OUCH!
Then there is pitching...
Guess where my DD is right now?
Pitching/batting practice. Where was she last night? Her pitching Coaches house getting her lesson.
End result?
:) PRICELESS!!:yahoo:

Pitchers work longer yes, but catchers work harder.
;)

I have to disagree with this!! Pitchers work every bit as hard!! They work differently for sure, but it is equally as difficult to train to eliteness. I am not taking anything away from catching, I know that is a very draining position to play, but don't sell the pitcher short either!

Nope. Kids are the ultimate indicator. All you have to do is ask, "Who wants to try to pitch." Just about every kid will raise their hand. Ask who wants to catch and most want NO part of that. Why??? kids aren't stupid. It's hard, you squat, wear all that gear, get beat up, get dirt in your face, have to talk to umpires, etc. Bad job.

A lot of people don't realize how much a good catcher does to help a pitcher have a good outing. The way they set up and how they catch can make the difference between a ball and a strike. And how well they block can make the difference between a win and a loss. I didn't realize it so much until my DD started her catching lessons. And when a parent of a pitcher practices with their DD they sit on a bucket, could be drinking a beer while they do it. When I practice with my DD I'm pitching or playing one of the bases and shagging a lot of balls. Didn't think it through all the way when I agreed she could take up catching. :(

Tell ya what i will supply the bucket and the beer for ya while i sit back sipping one watching as my daughters drop balls bash in your shins and god nows what other parts of your body and and hop up at your face at 50 plus mph.Have knots on me from last year still.Pitching ,by far the hardest to become elite at,catching can be the more grueling durring a game.

Looks like it is down to the Pitcher or the Catcher. BUT an amazing pitcher - won't look so good with a bad catcher. AND an amazing catcher won't look so good with a bad pitcher - so it seems to me - it is a co-position. If you have both - be thankful.;)

Ziggy you had me convinced entill you said an amazing catcher won't look good w/ a bad pitcher....I could not disagree w/ you more. I great catcher will look good all the time, especially w/ a wild pitcher. Digging pitches out of the dirt, slidding from side to side. I would love to say pitcher, because dd is a pitcher. I just love watching a good catcher do their thing!!!

There you go! Great analogy! (Sorry Ziggy, but I have to say I agree here ;) )
My DD has been a catcher longer than she has been a pitcher. Sort of, she switched every other year in REC due to age but mostly caught in travel ball.
I have seen some amazing game saves not only by her, but also, by other catchers due to a "drop into the dirt and stop that ball at all cost or the runner on 3rd is going to score to win the game", plays! :lmao: Due to a badly placed ball, or the low inside quickly becomes a high outside leap to protect the play AND the Ump!
...oO(How is that for a run-on sentence!!):lmao:

Maybe we should just post a poll? ;&

:lmao::lmao: I stoped trying to catch my DD at age 12!! That is my DH's job!

But the question is indeed, Toughest position to play in softball. Not hardest to become elite afterall. ;) I do agree on hardest to become elite but bottom line here folks.
No pitcher OR catcher is elite without a GREAT offence and defence behind them. Correct? I truly believe every position played is tough.
Eventually a batter will get past a pitcher and a runner will steal on a catcher. If the field is not strong behind its pitcher and catcher. We all loose. Maybe we should end this on every position is tough? ;)

While my daughter is a catcher, I would have to say that 3rd base is the hardest. Not just the small ball will get you. But, at any time the ball can come drilling at you when you're playing up close. Don't forget about the trick play that all third basemen have to learn, which is-when to act like you're throwing to first but get the runner out at third. Your third baseman could make or break your team when every run counts.

I still say every position. Especially at Travel ball level. Maybe some select High Schools.
They all better be the best at being tough in their positions.
One past grounder, droped fly, walk, steal home on bad pitch, missed catch throw down at 2nd, droped ball on a fly to the OF, so many scenerios I have seen allow that one run to beat you...All, are tough positions. ;)
