Travel ball practice during spring?

We have a 10u, 11u and 12u team in our organization. Each one holds at least one team practice a week. On our 11 u and 12u team 80+ % of the roster is from one rec league and every girl plays rec too. So on the 11u Streak team (I coach) I can hold an additional rec/streak practice each week.

In a couple years when my dd is 12u and in the 7th grade I'd want here to play jr. high ball and practice with her tb team. Her tb practices are so valuable that even if it was just weekends I'd still want her team practicing.

Sadly not if the MS program is OHSAA sanctioned

Jr. High team is club and ran through the local rec program after school funding issues and pay for play made it the best option. That is the only benefit to our youth sports programs thanks to our funding issues.

Once a week at minimum. At 10u- OHSAA affected...skills and team practice should never really stop. Some down will be determined usually occurring in December. Other sports will of course kick in and must be managed as well but never totally stop all.

I'd run...find a team now. Our 10u team hasn't taken off much if any. Lou is doing a great job with this group.

Good luck with your situation.

I ask this because this is my DDs 1st year in travel ball (10u). Mine as well. Her team has only practiced 1 time since Halloween. It is a very well known org (@ least according to these boards & general chatter) I can only think this is because the coach feels like girls will get pract w/ her rec team? I have quest the coach & he only assures me "Well be fine". I am VERY nervous about what I will see on field this summer. People tell me to leave but I know I will not get $ back. So I just wanted to confirm what I suspected all along.(about all other teams pract)

I admit... that would make me a bit nervous. My DD in 10u practices twice a week with the team and at least twice a week on her own doing drills and I STILL feel like it's not enough. I hope it works out for you. It sure would be nice to get your money back.

This is certainly something to ask coaches before accepting a spot with a team ... how often will they practice in the off-season including the spring ... a new coach might not know any better, an experienced coach might also coach high school ball and have too many conflicts this time of year, etc. Our 11-U team has essentially practiced the whole off-season, and is going just once a week now as the head coach has high school coaching commitments, and an assistant is playing college ball. But you can be sure we will hit the practice field hard as soon as that is all done. As some others have said, it is important that the families are working on their own during this time, ideally with pitching and hitting coaches, and with instructions from the travel coach on what to be working on. In the end, it is the individual families' responsibility to get their girls ready.

My advice here would be to continue to work on your own and stick it out for this season and see how it goes. If you're not happy with the experience, then look for greener pastures next year, and make sure you ask these kinds of questions up front.

I realize the question is about "team practice" - but the elephant in the room is... doesn't anybody believe in individual skill development?

BigTrain did, and organized it well, and it worked, he had the best 12u and 14u travel team this state has ever seen.

When I started this thread I was just lookin for advice on how to handle the situation we have. Im not suggesting that we will leave org as around our house we teach "you finish what you start no matter how bad it gets." Im just new to this whole scene so I thought I would ask how the fellow "veterans" handled this as I'm sure I'm not alone. Thanks for the input.

"Finish what you started" is also what we lived by. If you sign up for something, treat it just like a contract. Things sometimes aren't as rosy as they looked at first, but most things in life are that way. Travel ball is only a year-to-year contract, and honestly, at 10u to 12u, all is not lost on missing a spring's worth of team practices! Stick it out, and look for something else in the fall - chalk it up to experience and move on. Just spend a little extra time at the field with your DD working on individuals. Who knows? The extra time spent on individual development may go further in making your DD a stronger player than those spring team practices!
