Travel ball practice during spring?

A question for the 10 & 12u coaches/parents... Is your summer team still practicing in the spring as a team? Or is the coach not having any because of spring ball season?

Our team is still practicing. How would we be ready for tourneys if we don't? The few that we have that play school ball practice after school, so there is plenty of time to make it to tb practice. Those who are playing rec ball are well aware that the travel team games and practices
take priority. I think we only have one or two playing rec ball and we have three playing school ball.

I forgot to mention that the three we have playing school ball all live in PA, so no OHSAA dictating anything.

My 9 year old dd's team practices 3 times a week and has since fall. How can you compete if you aren't practicing? When I sign my dd up for travel ball, I expect to get year around work outs.

My dd's 10u team is practicing and every 10u team that I know of are practicing. Am I missing something here? Where does the 10u question come from? I get 12u because you have 7th graders that can be 12u. Is there other parts of the state that have school ball for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders? In a couple years when my dd is 12u and in the 7th grade I'd want here to play jr. high ball and practice with her tb team. Her tb practices are so valuable that even if it was just weekends I'd still want her team practicing.

Our 12u team is definitely practicing. And starting to work in a few friendlies on the weekends to get ready for the season.

Our 14u team has practiced once during the week and 3-4 hours on the weekend all spring... very lucky, only 2 players affected by school ball restrictions... we are playing and scrimmaging all we can!

I ask this because this is my DDs 1st year in travel ball (10u). Mine as well. Her team has only practiced 1 time since Halloween. It is a very well known org (@ least according to these boards & general chatter) I can only think this is because the coach feels like girls will get pract w/ her rec team? I have quest the coach & he only assures me "Well be fine". I am VERY nervous about what I will see on field this summer. People tell me to leave but I know I will not get $ back. So I just wanted to confirm what I suspected all along.(about all other teams pract)

Thanks for the answer. My dd's 10u practiced all fall until Nov. We started back in Jan. with one 3hr. practice a week. As soon as weather turned we have went to one weekday practice and one longer weekend practice. We have played 4 indoor scrimmage games and in one early tourney already. Thats probably about what the avg. 10u team has done. If you are not satisfied I'd have that talk with your current coach before looking somewhere else. Any coach who cares about his/her reputation will not talk to you about your daughter unless they know you have already had that talk with your current coach.

10u should be working out weekly at least - all fall, winter and now spring!

Along the same lines, after you go to the coach, if you are not getting answers, I would try and contact someone higher up in the organization. If it is a reputable one, most would like to be aware of this. I think how you approach this can be key. I would contact the coach in private, without other parents or any players around. Same with contacting a higher up.
If you approach with your mind of being concerened about your dd's growth as a player, any coach or person within an organization that doesn't see that would seriously throw some red flags up for me!
My dd's team is hitting the dirt hard, this is the best time to work out errors, not when tournaments are already beginning!

Agree at the 10u at least weekly or multiple times per week is a must (dependent on team goals)....

We went weekly thru the fall and winter except some breaks in Nov & Holidays...
Now that we are outside, we are practicing 2-3 x's per week.

...and I wonder if we are getting enough accomplished?

We have been practicing twice per week since August. We have played in 2 indoor tourneys plus 1 outdoor tourney. In addition to fall scrimmages. 23 games already. Right now we will be going to 3 days per week plus scrimmages and a spring league. There is a difference in playing at this level and competing at this level. I would definitely talk to your HC.

I realize the question is about "team practice" - but the elephant in the room is... doesn't anybody believe in individual skill development? Outside of team practices, how many head over to an empty field and work on basic infield drills? Pitchers MUST work on their own to succeed - they don't have the rest of the team at every practice. Point is, to be on top of their game and ready for team practice, infielders and outfielders really should be working on their own - individually - when not with the team.

Careful brother, making to much sense is punishable by death in some countries.

My DD is 10 but playing up on an 11U team this year but I have the same concerns as NOoffSeason. I do take my DD to the empty field at least 3 or 4 times a week plus in the yard a few times. But that is NO substitution for TEAM practices----especially at this young age----in my opinion. This is my DDs 2nd yr of tb---but now I'm thinking it would have been better to leave her at the 10U for this year instead of moving her up.

I can't speak for everyone but I took it outside of the "individual practice". I truely believe that at this level (as with anything in life), if you wish to get better, you must put in the time. Look on any field during any team practice. It is usually evident any girls that are not putting in the extra individual time. My dd catches and does a little pitching. Also fills in for ss. So beyond working her fielding a few times a week, we work catchers drills, pitching, and of course the all important hitting. Anyone that doesn't have their dd doing individual time doesn't have the big picture! IMHO.:D

I was waiting for the individual comment... My DD pitches 3 times a wk, along w a pitch instr once a wk. We work on her hit & field after each pitching session. Again this is just her, Im worried what the rest of team is doin(She also plays 3 games a wk w/ her rec team). As far as the team practice, I believe the girls need to be on the same page as far as defensive coverages & such. If the coach is relying on rec teams to coach them up, Im pretty sure they are not gonna be.

Our 14u team is very lucky as well, we only lost 2 to school ball and have been going strong since August. We practice atleast twice a week with many extras for the different positions, we get on the dirt every chance we get. Like VSFPcoach said, there is a difference between playing travel ball and being able to compete in travel ball and we want to compete.
