Umpire's at ASA States

I have to question one call. In our 1st bracket game, we played 9 innings with ITB Friday night and both teams had chances to win. In the bottom of the 8th, we had runners on 1st and 2nd when our batter hit a slow roller to the pitcher, I believe. She threw to 1st, but the 1st baseman who was clearly several feet in front of 1st base never even moved to the bag. The field ump called our batter/runner out at 1st and he was overturned on an appeal to the plate ump. We had bases loaded with no outs and then the field ump called our runner on 3rd out for leaving early. Did she really leave early or was he mad about being overruled? I was not watching her take her lead, but it did not feel right because we were not squeezing. The next batter hit a short single that would have won the game had our runner still been on 3rd, but our coach had to hold the runner coming from 2nd base because it was not a deep hit. Then came a liner to SS who doubled our runner at 3rd to end the inning.

Don't know how you can question a call you didn't see. Consider this, if she did leave early should he have NOT called her out because an earlier call of his was overturned on appeal and he didn't want to look like he was getting even or should he make the call and do his job? Sorry, sounds like sour grapes. ;&

Somebody needs to share the bizarre incident that an UMP created just prior to the Semi Final game between Laser Gold and Laser Black yesterday that ended with a fan ejection before game even started. Walked up moments after it happened, so don't know all the details, but sounded like Blue had a major Napoleon complex.

Anyone know exactly why Blue was acting so irate.

I'll share as I started it.

Lasers Gold had just defeated Ice and were walking up to field 2 to play Lasers Black who had just lost to Intensity. Everyone (both teams) were trying to get organized, line-ups, restroom break, etc...

Umpire tells Lasers Black girls to take the field, I look out towards the field house and the Lasers Gold coaches are walking to the restroom. I tell my players to stay on the bench as I haven't even finished my line-up and the other team isn't ready. I tell the umpire we will need a few minutes. The umpire again tells my players to take the field and I explain that we aren't taking the field till both teams are ready. The umpire then proceeds to tell me that we need to be ready to play cause we are NOW in the losers bracket, blah, blah to which I requested that he be quiet and don't lecture me on tournament ediquette or how to run my team. It was about this time that I am going to get thrown out of the game before it even starts because the umpire charges into my dugout where I am doing my line-up. When I stand up... one of my parents steps up to the fence and tells the umpire that he needs to remember its about the girls and he should check his ego at the fence. This distracts the umpire (like a bright light) and the umpire starts arguing with him and throws him out of the park - when the umpire walks away the parent says to me "I just took it off of you and put on me - go coach".

The parent requested to explain the situation to the tournament director and head of umpires. They apologized to me and my parent. They were noticably frustrated with the umpires behaviour and told my parent if he stood behind the backstop on the blacktop road he would be offically outside the park.

That's the story.

Thanks Mike. Glad to hear it was Class Act from Coaches, Parents and Players. I guess we all need to know that the long days also get to the UMPS.

HOWEVER, they are the ONLY ones getting paid(I THINK), as there are some rumors about MDs kid and her frequent free agencies. LOL! MD if true, shoot me a PM with the price and I'll see if it's in the team kitty. LOL!

Mike, that's a great story. Sounds like your parents are as committed to the good of the team as ours. Seriously, I thank our lucky stars nearly every day that we've got such wonderful parents. Our only problem is that if Coop did the "intervention" that you described we might all end up in jail. (j/k).

Can an umpire throw a spectator out of the park? I thought they only had control over the players and coaches and only the TD can throw out a spectator. Need to know, as a spectator who may not be as safe as he thought.

The umpire in the Wizards/VE game did the exact same thing to one of our coaches. I wonder if it was the same guy. I have a personal issue with the *** and I think I want to take it up with the TD.
Great job to all teams that were there. It was a really fun weekend.

We had our MN Only ASA NQ last weekend. States is in July. Got off to rocky start when I asked Blue before start of first game what they were going to do about the pitching rubber.

Blue looked at me with best pretentious air "There is no pitching rubber in softball". To which I replied "Okay, when are they going to move the pitcher's plate from 40' to 43' since this is 16U ASA play". Jerk wasn't even aware or the pitching distance change (had to check with UIC) and hadn't bothered to walk the field off for distances.

To top it off they pounded in temporaries at 43' and left the 40' "plate" in. Hosts offered to dig it up and replace after the weekend at their expense, but city workers said no way. Told UIC we would rather play qualifier at 40' than risk injury to a pitcher catching drag foot on the 40' plate in front of the 43' plate. UIC said no way. So in one swoop ASA refused to take any responsibility for making sure that the new pitching distance was communicated to the host, and took no responsibility for making a decision to modify the rules for the weekend in the interest of player safety. Given that this is the first weekend out of HS ball for our kids who pitched at 40' in HS it would have been minimally impactful.

Never complain about umps on here. Overall, a good job by all blue but there was one family - Dad, Daughter and Mom that were not strong to say the least but they were nice but just not real good. I can't say it favored either side but several calls were missed.

Mike, The same thing happened to us on field #1. We were told it would be a 10:15 start and at 9:45 they told us we are starting now! I personally was behind the outfield fence warming up half of the team while my assisstany told the ump to give us just a couple more minutes to get the girls/equipment in the dugout and he thrwe a temper tantrum over that and argued wastelessly with my coach. I understand you must be ready to play early but not if your the 1st scheduled game of the day. A few of these umpires in Elyria had some sort of complex and also refused to work together. Ex: In the game with Lasers Gold my batter drew a walk proceeded to 1st base and was called back by the ump. I questioned him since I had ball 4, asked the field ump whom also had ball4 and then went to the home book which also had ball 4! His response was I remember every pitch thrown that is why I DO NOT carry a counter with me and I dont care what everyone else has, I have ball 3! This is an umpire that obviously thinks he is above all when he refuses help from his partner during the game.

16U It clearly reads 1 hr and 15 min pool games, yet when we thought the game was over the umpires in pool play told us 1 hour and 40 min's?
