What your experience with a roster that has 11 girls on it.

How many weekends are girls "busy" or unable to attend a tournament ?

Do you expect them at every tournament ?

Do you finda replacment if they cant make 2 tournaments ?

We have had our share of graduations, weddings and general family stuff that i find as an acceptable reason to miss....but thats just me.

I coach 11U and I have 11 rostered players. I have never had a problem with not enough players. The key is to get 11 DEDICATED and COMMITTED players.

Key is to lay down the expectations at the beginning. This a team and team mates rely on team mates. If you are not at practice or games you are letting your team mates down and there is no room for that in travel. We started at 10u with a coach that benched players for missing practice or being late to games. When he said be there, dressed and ready to play at whatever time, you better be or you sat. Didn't mater who you were. Way it should be.

With my DD's teams in travel ball, I never saw a roster with fewer that 12 that wasn't a train wreck just waiting to happen! Murphy's law at it's finest... if something could go wrong, it did at the worst possible time.

Sounds like you coach 18u if you're talking about graduations?
When I played 18u my coach was really lenient about us missing (for a decent reason, not just I don't feel like showing up) with enough advanced notice. He understood that when you're 17/18 softball isn't really your life as much as it was in 12/14u. Our roster probably had 15 or 17 on it so that there was wiggle room for us to have/attend graduation parties and other summer events. This was a competitive team, too....I do believe all but 1 or 2 went on to play college ball. At that age, I think a lot of girls are likely to hear "you must be at every game" and decide to find another team that will allow their social lives to actually exist... ;&
I think you'll be lucky to have found 11 completely committed and available 17/18 year old girls...
Just my opinion though =)

Limited experience tells me you can get by with 10 and not have an issue; you can have 13 and hope you have a place and time to play them all.
As for me, I'm glad Mrs. Starzzdad popped out #4 at 12:01 AM 20 mos ago. I wasn't sure how I was gonna get out of there when I had to get the oldest to her fall ball game and start warming up by 7:30...

Life EVENTS always come first. Softball is but a fleeting moment.

Weddings, Brother playing in HS State Championship, Funeral, Graduation......Any team not expecting kids to attend LIFE EVENTS LIKE THIS, has lost sight of what is really important, and that is IT'S TEAM MEMBERS.

Generally, those things shouldn't happen that often. However, I can also see how ADVANCED NOTIFICATION is a MUST,so TEAM can plan accordingly.

This .... is a very wise man. And probably somebody involved with a dedicated group, that knows that if you give respect, you get respect .... if you chose correctly on the front end.

I agree... well said Triple! Communicate...clearly... and they will help you get through the issues. I've picked up players and been happy to do so when these events occur.
