Just wondering what other organizations do?

If you have several girls returning to a particular team, do you have them attend tryouts? Do you introduce them to everyone as "returning players" so everyone knows that they are already on the team?

Just wondering how others approach this.....

I pretty much just selected the players from previous season that I did not want to lose, and then however many roster spots are left, those are the spots players try out for. So yeah, I guess I would say they are called "returning players invited to continue their career with our organization." haha.

Only question is, what do you do if you end up finding a bunch of girls during tryouts that are better than what you already committed to keeping from the previous season?

If you're a man, you honor your word. These are kids lives we are talking about. What you can do tho, is take the extra kids and see who weeds themselves out. JMO

Or, you start a second team by recruiting a few more players and do what many organizations do, and have a Black Team/Red Team, or whatever. :)

Of course the girls who play the previous year have an inside track but we tell our girls at the tryouts that just because you played last year it doesn't guarantee you a spot on this years team. That way we see their best and can compare it to the best of the new girls trying out so we can select the best team overall.

The question I keep asking whenever I see this written:

Why didn't your organization make those players from the previous year better?

It is easy to pick good talent - it is hard work to develop talent.

I would propose that any organization that says they are always on the lookout for the best talent is essentially saying that they don't have the ability to develop any talent.

It's not that we don't develop the talent of the players selected. It's more of as an example, we have a growing community, do you penalize a girl who just moved into town or maybe a player leaves another organization because they aren't happy with the direction of that organization. There are many other circumstances on selecting new players. Personally I have carried pretty much the same team since 12U, I now coach 18U and I'd like to think I do a good job developing my talent but if I have a stud player move in from out of town or from another organization I'm going to add them to the team.

i personally believe that once ive selected a team, i would hope that they would want to come back and continue their travelball careers with us. if i have a full team coming back, then theres no need for a tryout, and its my job to get them playing up to the level that im looking for. if someone is unhappy and leaves then ill try shopping around and look for someone to fill the void. i'd hate to have a tryout and have 20 kids show up looking to get on my team when there might only be 1 to 2 spots we're looking to fill.

SDs--
this works if you have a group small/big enough to run a practice-type tryout, wherein it's not just timed runs and hitting from the machine...the girls practice together, do some of the same drills they would in a practice and see what they show...the coach can call out his returnees, or the girls can usually spot them for themselves--see who helps coach, what girls are wearing the team shirt/shorts at tryouts, and they talk while they are in line waiting for the next grounder, or getting a drink, so they know who is where and sometimes even what positions are still open...

It would be nice if the Laserleader would chime in on this about the Laser Gold 12U team. I would bet the farm that they need just a few specific needs/kids for that team. If you found success and chemistry why bust it up just for the sake "open try-outs." I did see where they are going to have two 12U teams, probably to help keep the Gold team together.

For the Buckeye Heat the practice Joe A started continues. We ask that continuing team members attend the tryouts and do the same things as the players trying out (though not so much that we don't get a very good look at the prospective players). We find that this practice gives the prospective players a better sense of the team in terms of talent, personality, etc. And we always post exactly what each team needs.

Recruiting always seemed to work a lot better than tryouts for our teams.

Our team as been together a few years and the girls are loyal to the coaches and we are loyal to them and wouldn't have it any other way. We may not win them all but we do pretty well!
They will not have to tryout but they do know what is expected of them.
Two of our players did struggle quite a bit batting and fielding this season and we did talk with them and told them they would have to get back on track because performance would determine when they bat and who rotates in and out of positions.
We are picking up 2 this year because we have been going with 10 and if someone is hurt, sick or has a family emergency, it can really have an impact if it is more than 1 at a time.
I have received requests for tryouts and that has worked out great for us.
A coach from a team we see at tournaments all of the time emailed me asking if a girl from his team could tryout, she is the only player from that team having to move up due to age and then there is a girl who was too old to go with us last year but wants to come back.
We are going with who we coaches, players and parents are comfortable and familiar with.
Before calling these girls we discussed it with the team, they know these 2 girls and are excited about adding them to their team!
We are not having a tryout, we have seen them both play and we know what they can bring to the team.
I agree that I don't want 10 girls showing up and then disappointing them because you really only need a couple.
The other requests I respond honestly that we don't have any open positions.

i'd say almost every team ends up recruiting kids to try outs they know they want, its not too often you get a kid at your tryout you've never seen or heard from but if you do thats obviously great news for your team! I'd say bring your girls and show the new ones what you team is made up of

Our returning players aren't required to participate in try-outs...we already know what they're capable of. Although, we do request that they attend try-outs and assist the coaches in whatever way needed. We like having the current players visible and helping on the field. Its also nice to have a couple in the actual try-outs, if only for the purpose of comparison. We give all of our players the opportunity to return the following year and believe loyalty is important for our organization. If we hit the jackpot and have too many of one age group to choose from, then we'll add a 2nd team.
