Todd,

My apology, I was under the impression that your group was solely Emerald Necklace until three years ago. I am not trying to take away anything you have accomplished, I think you and your crew are doing a great job.

I hesitated to get in on this one however it has its merits...we have done several coaches clinics and hitting clinics in the area and around the state of Ohio. Crystl and I changed the format of how we teach hitting in 2004 after I met Don Slaught as I felt Don expanded my knowledge on how the body actually works using video. We introduced throwing prior to teaching hitting mainly because it is easier to communicate balance, weight shift and momentum for throwing and then draw analogies to show what is similar to hitting. On several occasions you will hear a parent say my daughter already knows how to throw in a very sarcastic tone of voice. I usually say which one is yours? When you can predict which ones can not throw by how they swing there is a trait you can identify in most cases....no weight shift or balance equals poor throwing mechanics! At the recent Hawks Clinic I was given the opportunity to work with a girl whom I had never worked with and she had not been to any of our clinics. I soft tossed her three balls, inside, middle and away and she pulled all three pitches. I made the mother upset when I said she probably does not throw well either. I whispered to the mother watch when she throws as her back leg will not release, her arm will go straight down and not across her body and her arm should hurt at the elbow and shoulder. She threw three balls and the mother gasped and said how could you possibly knew that was going to happen? The daughter said did you tell him my arm always hurts there? Again no balance, no weight shift in hitting and I would suspect they will be poor throwers. The only time I have been wrong was with a boy who did not hit well however he was a great pitcher. The girl I was working with was 15 or 16 I think. The question is how did she make it this far without being shown the fundamentals for throwing and catching a ball by one of her coaches or a parent? I know and understand not all kids have a dad involved in their life and understand that however to have played this long and no one has shown her how to play without her arm hurting her!

So you wonder why this state or that state is better and you look at the fundamentals being taught and in most cases it is by a male. At the coaches clinic there may have been 65 coaches and I think 5 maybe 6 were females. I asked a male coach to show me what balance was and he could not do it and neither could a female coach. Then I explained the difference and why and then both of them got it and I proved it would only work one way and we could test for it so the player could feel it. That may have taken 6 minutes. We used the mantra Measurable and Observable and how could we test to see if it worked and if the player could feel the difference. The girl I worked with at the clinic took 20 minutes to show a marked improvement in her throwing technique and probably an hour plus to be able to hit the ball to all fields.

Bill Hillhouse touched on the subject of what pitching coaches are teaching in this area and without going into a lot of detail he brought his arm up and over the shoulder and said that is just wrong and it is a accident waiting to happen as the arm should finish across the body. I was sitting next to Marc Degenais and he agreed. I stood up and said I have seen Doug Gills teach and now you and you are very close to what he does as to mechanics. I know girls that have been to both of you and they throw harder, have more movement on the ball and their arms, shoulder and backs do not hurt anymore...why? Fundamentals! The girls as well as the coaches are not, have not been taught the fundamentals just for throwing and that includes balance!

Then I got to watch Howard Kobata and was impressed with his techniques. However the girls could not throw properly. At dinner that night we discussed that and Howard K sent an email to me about how what we taught seemed to flow and tie in from one movement to the next and that he was changing how he presented his techniques so the coaches would hopefully ask more questions and if they could not feel what it was he was trying to teach. He stated that in the last few clinics it changed and we are sharing ideas about how to change what we present so the coaches see it, feel it and fix it!

Also if you feel this same thing is not happening at the college level just look around at the next game and see how they throw? How did they get there and what are they being taught? How can you teach what Howard K does, and I think what he teaches works, to a person that can not even get balanced from a coach who can not even show you the player how to get balanced or feel the difference? As they said in the Navy "stuff" all flows down hill!

We have not as a community stressed the fundamentals and balance, throwing, running, sliding are very basic and then look around you at all the knee braces, ice bags and you wonder why? All the girls should be given a chance to improve and find a level of play they can compete at and enjoy the sport of softball and we as coaches or teachers need to improve what and how we do it so they can take it to the next level whatever it may be.

I have worked with many of you in the community and have seen the improvements you have made with your teams because of your individual effort to do the basics and it started with balance and throwing techniques and you are building on a solid foundation when you do that in my opinion.

I think the Hawks Clinic was good for this community as it clearly showed a lack of fundamental skills is missing within any organization and can be improved when all the coaches get on the same page and the kids reap the benefits of your efforts...Les, Kavin, Tom, Doug, Derek, MEB, Chris, Tim, Cshilt, Kurt, Tom L, Dan, Shayne, Gerry....stay on course! You can see the progress already...throwing is a fundamental start to a sound foundation in my opinion.

so, what was going on in mother Russia around oct 1812 ?

Hey, Klump, ""Alot of teams are having to pull mediocre talent from the rec leagues just to be able to field a team. I have seen quite a few players who have no business being on a travel team""
Are you an ARROGANT AS***** or what? Some kids LIKE TO PLAY SOFTBALL. Rec leagues simply do not provide much opportunity to do so. Go ride your high horse to Moscow circa Oct. 1812.

My team is a group of girls all from the same small school dist. - so we're not classified as a "travel team", but that's what we do every summer. They've been together for 4 yrs off and on. We aren't in a league anymore because there was no competition for them. They're the most talented group of girls I've seen and when you factor in they're all from the same school dist. its very impressive. Last summer we competed against true travel teams - won some and lost some, but never by much. We took 2nd place several times and finished in top 4 at most tourneys. This will be their last year together bc half will be in 9th next yr & some will be moving on to true travel ball.

What I am getting at, if these girls didn't have a team/coach that believed in them 4 years ago, they would still be playing Rec Ball. If they had tried out for a true travel team, 4 yrs ago (in a bigger city) they prob wouldn't have made it. Its these small undeveloped teams that are giving these girls a chance. Yes they usually get blown away in a tourney (we've had are share over the yrs), but it makes them try harder. And the team that beat them, thinks they're great - so everyone wins. Every tourney will have some not so great and some great teams - if you get to win some before getting "whooped" on, then you did pretty good - your goal doesn't have to be 1st place, but to win some games and to learn. Eventually most of these teams' players will go on to a travel team, depending on what their goal is.

I think most of the teams we are seeing "pop up" are younger teams - 12U and younger. These will only help out the older teams in the long run - they will see more talent coming up, opposed to girls trying out straight from a Rec team. Families will also be aware of what they are in for when it comes to travel ball.

This is supposed to be about teaching the girls to be the best players - coaches have to put time into teaching - not expect them to be the best when they get them. The best player ever just might be sitting on the bench waiting for a coach to teach her all about softball!

Great post Bulldog! My DD played on a "tweener" team very similar to what you describe - I think it was in the original 270 outerbelt league. It was a great transition (full of great memories!) from rec. to real travel ball.

Any kid who wants to play SHOULD be provided an opportunity. That's why I don't believe in cuts in school ball below the high school level. If the will and desire are strong enough, nothing will stop them - not even money. There is always a creative way if the will is strong enough.

fourts, ""This IS travel ball not Rec.League that's why travel has try outs and yes teams are having trouble filling there roster and don't kid yourself, coaches are taking kids that they normally wouldn't. If the "truth" is arrogant than there are a lot of arrogant coaches out there.""
Rec league here in SE Ohio consists of roughly 10 games with inadequate coaching. DD's 1st high school coach last spring was at best a top ten contender for worst coach in Ohio. Klump seems to have had the benefit of being able to experience a full "career" of as much ball and quality coaching as she desires. If her first 8 years of ball had consisted of the same experience as my DD she might not even be here on this thread. To sum up Klumps statement that many kids don't DESERVE a chance to play is beyond sensibilty. One final point I would make after seeing one season of travel ball. If the powers that be limited travel teams to X number in the state and made available to all poor DDs the training that the DDs here have had, many of the DDs here would be considered mediocre.

Wow, someone is really touchy. When someone asks for an opinion and others give it, remember, it isn't directed to you or your family, it is just an opinion. Jeez.
First off, I came from a pig farm in NEO, we were dirt poor and I had 5 siblings. We didn't get the benefit of great clinics, instruction, or coaching. We went to whatever free open gyms we could and would take any help offered. Back then there wasn't the internet to get info so we read alot of books on softball, rented alot of tapes from the library, and watched as may college and upper level travel games as we could. We fundraised our way onto travel teams and worked our butts off to get scholarships to pay for college. I had no silver spoon as you are refering, which is why I do a TON of free instruction to players of all ages, to give back what was given to me when I was young. I give more instruction to kids who can't afford it than you could count, so before you start throwing the elite thing at me, get to know me and then decide. If you have the talent, you only need the desire to get better.
I think it is great that more players have the opportunity to play the game at the next level and I think it is a good thing. But it is also the reason why it is so hard to fill the rosters which is the topic brought up.
You really need to work on thickening that skin and not taking things so personally. I don't know you or your dd, but you need to chill out a bit.

JMHO JMHO JMHO There, I wrote it 3 times to make up for forgetting it last time!! ;&

Flatline, ""I thought Klump was a little harsh, maybe she should have thrown in a JMHO.""
My DD has been "cheated" about everyway one can be in softball. So, yes, I am touchy. She's better than mediocre and might be pretty good if she had the opps many here have had. Her first at bat this summer for her travel team was a rocket line drive to right that tailed hard away from the fielder. Our scorer ruled it an error. The scorers DD hit a sluggish shot straight to the same fielder who missed it. What do you know? It was a hit!
If one really wanted some added competition in travel ball get government grants for the inner city girls that are conspicously absent. Grill them with the best coaching for a few years and see what happens.

Find the opportunities for her, that is what my parents did. They are out there, you have to find them. Ask around, find a former player who is willing to do some work. If she wants to better herself, there are more opportunities out there than ever before. I know I'm not the only one who does free instruction. More and more teams are popping up in SEO, I've talked to a few coaches from the area so I know they are out there, but you have to ask!!

JMHO!!

AMEN HOWARD! If we improve the our knowlege as coaches, we can train Ohio players better and safer. If we can raise the talent level of the average player then the state of Ohio softball is more competitive as a whole.

Let's face it rec softball is all but dead and these players are left with two options; Travel softball or rec soker :( I personally hope we have enough options for these girls to play select softball.

There is always the option to pull players from Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Pennsylvania into Ohio organizations. ;)

There was a history prof that taught at Kent, who lived adjacent to blossom. He was an civil war collector and had napoleon cannons; they were known for their mobility making them desirable in that theater. Anyway, he was contracted to preform (bring his cannons)along with the Orchestra and he loved it. FR

There are some girls that want to play travel ball but for whatever reason (money, family, time availability, etc.) can't dedicate the amount of time desired and expected by travel teams. They play rec ball and succeed at it but are not challenged by the rest of the "talent" in the rec league.

An example is my DD. She played U10 rec last year and was one of the top 2 pitchers in the league out of 5 teams (not sure what merit that has)and has been taking private lessons for a couple of years now. She hit very well too. The problem was unless she was at bat or pitching, she was not getting any action in the field because the rest of the girls were not hitting. This year she is joining a newly established U12 team (yes, yet another team) that is made up of the better girls from the same rec league. They will play 5 or 6 tournaments in the summer so they can be challenged more but they will continue to play in the rec league as well. The philosophy of the coaches is not just to win but to continue to educate the girls on the game and challenge them more with tougher competition. They will continue to play rec so they can be leaders on a team and get as much experience as possible. They don't expect to win tournaments. They do expect to win a game here and there but hang tough in all games. It might work, it might not. We will see after the season but I like the thinking. We will see.

I like the way you and the Coaches think. That is how a player and a team get better.

We need to set aside our differences and remember why we support this game. It's not about us. It's about the team and the girls that play the game. Two key words here. "Play" and "Game".

That's what we did at 10, 12, and 14 u levels. Our 14U team ended finishing 2nd in the state at Little League. The state winner ended up finishing 2nd in the region.

To sum up Klumps statement that many kids don't DESERVE a chance to play is beyond sensibilty.

And just to clear things up, I didn't say that the kids don't deserve a chance to play, they just need to play at their skill level. I said there are players who have no business being on a travel team. Have you ever seen a travel team play a rec team? It is not only embarrassing for the rec kids, but it is not safe. There is a higher level of play and aggressiveness that most rec players are not used to. I've seen them get hurt and that is not what the game is about. That is why there is rec league, select teams, and travel teams, so everyone can find a place to play at their own skill level. Travel ball isn't for everyone. JMHO

Klump, I think there are a lot of people on OFC that agree with both of your statements. I can honestly say that I think it all the time but dont have the stones to post it(I guess I am now) I worry at times that my own daughter is not good enough as she is progressing through her travel experience. They have to play to know, she has to see a stud catcher to see where she needs to improve and I think she is seeing it and challenging herself.
I have said on here before~ I wish more girls in our city were playing travel ball, but as you said it needs to be at the right level. JMHO:D

This is truly the crux of the issue, safety. I don't think there is a travel ball coach that wouldn't love to have an endless flow of kids that want to play, but can they compete safely. You DO NOT want to put a kid that can barely catch a cold let-alone a smoking shot off of a Rocketech on the infield. Injury is very likely especially if the pitcher is sub-par for the level of play.

There is always the old arguement that you're only going to get better by playing better competition, and for the most part that is very true. Those steps to improvement need to be just that, steps and not leaps. JMHO
