Re: ASA Eligibility and Age, Fact and Fallicy
Hi ringer, ""Maybe I misread your tone, it is awful hard to judge someone's tone with only written text"" That is a real understatement. Down here in SEO getting game time for my DD is a nightmare....posted 10-29-09

then on 12-01-09 we get this...
Are you an ARROGANT AS***** or what? Some kids LIKE TO PLAY SOFTBALL. Rec leagues simply do not provide much opportunity to do so. Go ride your high horse to Moscow circa Oct. 1812.

So what happened in three days ?

Obsessiveness needs to be addressed. Yes, WHEN I WAS YOUNGER a player had to be great to even be considered. That was 20 years ago man!!!! Now times are different and so is the sport. I don't know your DD and I didn't say she shouldn't be allowed to play. I said BACK WHEN I PLAYED you had to be great to play because there were very limited teams....20 years ago.

Hey Klump. How much younger?

I think you mean 33 days. I have trouble with the new Math also.

So, where do I find a Napoleonic cannon from the War of 1812? I'm sure my neighbors would love to hear that thing from my back yard on the Fourth of July! Oh wait..........Never mind. I'm sure we'll be at a tournament. Maybe I could fire it off in the hotel parking lot?

Teach Your Children Well Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good-bye
Teach your children well
Their father's hell
Will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks
The one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you.

And you, of tender years
Can't know the fears
That your elders grew by
And so please help them with your youth
They seek the truth
Before they can die.

Reality check....some kids want to play and do not want to practice or get better and their parents support that (deep pockets maybe) and must assume the risks associated that come with using a bat and a ball because that comes with the territory of playing the game.

Find the level of play you desire to participate at and have fun and understand their is inherent risks associated with a ball coming off the bat at 90 to 100 MPH depending on the age group and equipment being used or altered. Additionally, there is also a risk of getting a ball thrown at your daughters face by another kid at 55 to 70 MPH, again depending on the age group and her face becoming the glove (target) because she was not taught how to field it or may not be paying attention and just wanted to be playing with her friends however you the parent should know that already.

Softball and baseball is a game played by kids however it is orchestrated and run by adults and adults do not like to loose to kids or other adults!

If a kid at another level is playing a team that has some competitive kids with coaches who will literally do what ever it takes to win, that kid becomes a statistic and at whose risk or whose fault? All you have to do is go over some old threads to read about what some coaches have done and would do to win, so you can not say it does not happen! So when it does happen do not be shocked! :D

Any kid wanting to play should be allowed and the parent should be smart or intelligent enough to find the right level of play for their daughters skill level and athletic ability and ................

you the parents Teach Your Children Well or find someone who can!

Like it or not there are now many levels of travel softball. I think it is up to the coaches of these teams to pick their schedules according to talent level. Showcases are not for the entry level talent, we all know pretty much the established teams compared to the new teams. Every tournament lists the teams that are entered. There is a place for every girl to be playing travel softball. There are a lot of girls that are not challenged by Rec ball and there are travel teams for them. Find the right situation for you dd's. My dd has worked her butt off for 4 years with year round training, she now plays for one of the best teams around. That is how it works moving up the ladder. There are plenty of tournaments geared for elite teams and every other talent level. Good luck all. That is what makes this sport so fun. JMHO

Good post. And to think, I was going to type the lyrics to "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." I guess it's just the Christmas spirit in me.

I have made this suggestion the past 4 years, we need levels like they have in travel hockey and minor league baseball lol.

AAA, AA and A. Once you pick a division you are stuck there for the year, with the exception being your allowed to move up 1 level. So if you have an inexperienced team play in "A" tournaments, if you want to see if the next year your team is ready to make a move enter as a "AA" team and see where you stand lol.

I haven't worked out all the kinks in my theory and I know as with everything we do in life there will be some tools that don't follow the spirit of the rule.

Very well put Hitter. It can be hard fielding a team & keeping it together. You need players that can put their egos aside and put team first, and then they need to play nicey with each other (chemistry) and most important I think is the players all need to share the same goal. It's not fair putting Susie Stud Muffin whose goal is to play in college and practices daily and Mary Beth Cupcake whose goal is to be the prettiest of the 11 on the same team together. Every girl that wants to play should have the opportunity, just understand goals and skill levels. JMHO

All I am getting out of this. Is nobody wants to work with these girls. Give me the money and time the travel teams have and I will have a competitive team. They are only kids they need to be taught the fundamentals. But teams are to quick to just play indoors. You learn through repitions not 80 minute games where a girl only bats once and plays the field 2 innings. Give a girl a fish and she eats today. Teach her how to play ball and she eats forever.

Uber, I agree. Needs to be an "A", "B", and a "C" classification with tournaments for each.

I also agree and don't let the C go to an A class tourney. Plus only allow a B to move to an A towards an end of a season and they proved that they out-muscled the B field.

Good Jim. It was small cartilage tear from a collision. I think she's close to 100%. She's been on fire this Fall, I've never seen her so sharp and in command the way she's been. She's shut down some very good teams. I think the rest did her good. Thanks for asking.

First look into the thread....wow.

There are more teams out there... yes many of them watered down so to say with ball players filling the rosters.....

But, rec at 10u-14u is future travel girls. At least we hope. The problem lies in the rec dept and lack of instruction there. Under no mindset, are these coaches knowledgable in their teaching... Coaches do it because many parents can't so someone jumps in. That same coach fights having enough girls to play in a rec league game that night... because of the lack of "Suzie" being motivated enough to go stand in a hot sun for two hours.

I have seen horrible rec leagues over the years. Absolutely horrible and girls learning nothing. Then you have a coach who puts time and effort and has a pretty good rec team..... make the mistake of never playing anything other than rec. I've seen rec league champions make that jump to travel ball tournaments and take a beating beyond question.... and then the coach gets the cold shoulder from the parents.

That's where the problem lies with the rec girls.. "SOME" want to move on up and get challenged. But, just some.

I have always said that tournaments should be held for three divisions. Gold, "A" and "B".

Obviously, the rec league champions would have been better off playing in a "B" event. But, there was no guarenteed "B" event to play in... just a tournament !!!

ASA is : Gold (self explainitory) "A" (ALL other travel teams) and "B" (Rec).

USSSA is Gold, "A" better travel teams, "B" other travel teams, "C" rec

Problem is the amount of tournaments in Ohio when it comes to the rec league champions' deliema. Because of all these tournaments in Ohio, the field is limited and NO TD can even think about having a separated "A" - "B" division. The teams are too spread out over many events.

Where I see the problem is the option for a TD to have those type of events.... and obviously no association head wants to put themselves in the middle of being the person "who classifies teams "A" or "B".... even though they do in the men's side of the game in this state.

Rec tournaments in Ohio... and the bad experience suffered by some... is when a TD is willing to compromise a "B" team into a rec tourney and the rec teams gets a bad taste in their mouth. Usually, they will tell on one another....lol

But, Ohio offers nothing to the rec for a true event... as rec classifications anymore turn into classifications (Rec and All-Star rec).... there is NO such thing as an All-Star rec team. If you picked up players off the other rec league teams... YOU ARE NOW a "B" team in travel ball and no longer rec. And coaches are a serious when they want to keep their "rec" status... so they can go trophy hunt and seem better than they really are indeed. And then this All-Star rec team gets into a travel tournament with some "A" and "B" teams and take their run-rules and closer games from the "B" teams..... and then the coach says..."See I am a rec team" ......lol

But, the 10u, 12u 14u rec grils are indeed SOME of the travel ball girls in the future.

I just haven't figure out why some of these larger organizations don't have "farm teams" so to say. Look into your area.. find a rec league... take some of the rec girls after the leagues are over... and take them out to tournaments to get them a taste of it. The farm team can support the travel teams and it can give the travel ball coaches a better look at some of these girls who have attitude and some experience and workable .... and give them a try out in August.

Instead of not only having college showcases... maybe we should have "rec ball showcases" and all the travel coaches attend to try to persuade the girls to come play for them.... lol

Now, there's an idea...... "rec ball showcases" and invite (and list) all travel ball coaches who are going to attend the event....lol
