Your talking about trying to find the best coaches to coach a Team Ohio that will never exist.
Parents will never allow their DD's to play on a team that has players that are better then their DD.
How much are you planning on charging the players to play on this team, or who do you plan on footing the bill.
Your talking about the best coaches that you don't want to pay??!!!
To be seen properly the team must do a lot of traveling, none in the state of Ohio.
You will need to play in CA, CO, NV, AZ, TX, FL, GA, SC at least to play the caliber teams needed for big D1 schools to even notice you.
Again, you don't want to pay the coaches for a full time job???
You will also need an indoor facillity to practice at least 3 times a week.
Again no money.
Your best players would be from all corners of the state, how many parents want to drive 4 hours 1 way for a practice on Tuesday night.
Good luck with your team.

Not negative, realistic.
I've coached travel ball for over 10 years and about 5 years of high school ball.
I've put teams together that traveled to CO, SC, FL and other states and competed well
I can also tell you that trying to keep that great team together is tough if not impossible.
And with out the kids being able to play for free and with out the coaches being paid, you will never be able to draw the talent to put this team together.
Sorry I really hate to burst the bubble

None.......These coaches should be doing it for the love and passion of the game. The lessons these coaches are teaching these girls on and off the field and helping to get these girls college schollarships is their pay and bonus.

I have to disagree here. If you are trying to form a "Team Ohio", a team of 15 to 18 of the best players in the state, this team will do a ton of travelling in order to play nationally. Also, this coach would have a huge amount of administrative work on his or her hands trying to get every girl scholarships, setting up motels, setting up practices, putting together skills videos, etc. It would be a full time job. There is no way you could not pay a coach to run such a team. A team like this would be very expensive.....in the thousands not including travelling expenses. A coach could not possibly do anything else in the summer besides run this kind of team, so they would have to be able to take a leave from their job for the summer, or if they are self employed, temporarily shut their business down.

A team of this caliber does not need a hitting coach, fielding coach, catching coach, nor a pitching coach on the staff. The kids/parents should be responsible for their own specialty coaches. A team like this needs three coaches max, and the duties should be split between 3rd base, 1st base, and bench/book coach. The coaches job should be nothing more than to know the game, get a team like this to run like a well-oiled machine, showcase the kids, and know how to win, not necessarily to teach life lessons. The only time the coaches will see the kids would be during the one or two practices they have in a month, and at the tournaments. Remember, the kids on this type of team are from all over the state; there is no possible way to have two or three practices a week during the season.

16 Ball Players at $225 a month dues for 10 months=$2250 per player= $36,000 total for all expenses
14 tournaments @$500 average=$7000
Equipment/Balls/Field Rental/Cage time/Insurance=$3000
2 Coaches Hotels x 8 tournaments for 19 nights total=$3800
2 Coaches Plane Tickets @ $300 x 5 touraments x 2=$3000
Miscellaneous Expense=$1500

$18,300 Total Expenses
$10,000 Head Coach Salary
$ 7,000 Asst. Coach Salary
$35,300 Total Costs (leaves $700 for Food for the coaches)

We as parents commonly drop $300 to $500 each weekend the kids require an overnight stay. Most teams do it at least 2 to 3 times a summer in Ohio, not including Nationals.
Fastpitch softball teams goaling and playing an ASA/USA Nationals schedule will cost a family about $5000 per year min., does not include the cost of Nationals?
$5000 for family expenses x 16 players is $80,000, so as you can see there is enough money to play year round and out of state, while taking 2 months off! Parents attend the local tournaments, 4 Den Monthers for out of state tournaments, and the kids can be seen and recruited nationally, so if the University of choice is $20,000 per year thats an $80,000 savings in college loans and tuition. For an expense of $20,000 during the 4 years of High School to achieve a Scholarship. Seems like a deal to me!
12 of those players go on Scholarship to a $15,000 year College the total College Tuition cost is $720,000. The combined player 4 year travel ball expense of $5000 x 12 x 4years=$240,000. Total Savings in Tuition Expense $480,000, so seems kind of priceless to me.

I'm going to have to agree with Les' assessment that Kavin Morgan will produce a good number of girls that will play at the collegiate level. Every girl that is currently with Cincy Static '97 has a very good chance to play at the next level, and I believe Kavin will play an important part in these girls achievement of that goal.

My DD is a pitcher on Kavin's team, and although Kavin isn't her pitching coach (big plug for Pat Pollock here), she has learned so much about hitting, and the game in general, from Kavin, that she is well on her way to achieving her goal of playing in college, and hopefully doing so with some type of scholarship.

In no particular order...
Mike Marcum of the Stingrays...Phil Marcantonio of the Wolfpack...Jim Clark of the Buckeye Heat...Jeff Cavanaugh of the Lasers...Tim Gregory of the Doom...Rick Sherman of the Roadrunners...Ron Poole of the Ohio Ice...Tig Lalli of the Ohio Pride...Brian Anderson of the Buckeye Heat...David Beckham of the Ohio Classics...Don Bates of the Ohio Ice (previously w/Ohio Pride)

I have a few more floating around in my head and I will post when I think of them...hopefully!!

Anyone mention my boy JP????;&;&

I will. DD has only been playing for him for a short while...but has never attended such intense, focused, and skill-enhancing practices in all of her years of softball. He knows the game extremely well, and the players love working hard for him and producing results...and in both practice and games, he keeps it fun. (FYI...she has played for good coaches her entire career...so this is a heartfelt and objective appraisal)

My bad, I wasn't talking about a ""Team Ohio"" coach, just Travel Coaches in general, I would agree that a "team Ohio" coach should be paid.

My 2 Nominees:

The reason I nominate these 2 guys is 1st-they can take good(but not great) talent and compete and beat the supposed 'great teams' almost every time, because they know the game.

I think someone else said earlier there are alot of great recruiters or managers that get the best players on a team but dont know the game and it shows in the big games when split 2nd decisions have to be made sometimes.

John Miller -Doom 96 - 1st the guy really cares about the girls, he has a big heart and behind that tough guy look- he's a big teddy bear, knows the game about as good as anyone I have been around, best practices hands down.

Mike Wilson-Formerly Lasers black- Have known Mike for many years, knows the short game and when to use it better than most and understands game about as good as anyone, takes marginal players and beats the great ones!

pcaba - thanks for the kind words. I would have to disagree with you however, my teams did not have marginal players - they were very talented and dedicated players who for the most part nobody knew about - its why the Lasers Black team has remained for the most part unchanged since it was started. It was a group of girls who truly enjoyed playing together as friends and teammates.

I am honored to be mentioned in this thread overall, I love coaching it is a true passion of mine, in fact I will probably do it even after my 3 dd are grown.

But interestingly, I now think I have come to the personal realization that I am probably not the best coach for my own 14u DD anymore. That is not a bad thing, it has actually been a very good thing. It has caused my DD and I are closer than ever because I get to work with and be primarily concerned about just her, she is working very hard playing for a great coach (Glen Widner - as Murph mentioned) who I believe is truly focused on helping each player reach her goal of playing at the next level - skill-wise, mentally and exposure. Glen has been down this road before and it shows.

I am watching, listening and soaking it all in because I have two more DD's coming up through the ranks not to mention that the way we all become better coaches it to learn from each other.

All this is fine and good, but what everyone seems to forget is what kind of degree these girls are getting. After all the goal of going to college is to get an education that leads to a job that you can prosper with and not struggle to make ends meet. I still say the academic scholarship is what our goal should be. JMHO

I agree in theory...as I have a dd with a 4.5+ GPA that takes all honors classes at a very academically-oriented parochial high school, scored very well on her ACT, yet when we have met with various colleges, the academic $ they were offering her was peanuts compared to the money she is being offered for softball. We are extremely fortunate, as we get to combine the best of both worlds to make college extremely affordable. Plus, she has always wanted to play college ball...so she gets to realize a dream while simultaneously pursing her rest-of-her-life career plans.
