I totally retyped my answer because the first time I read your post I didn't notice you said he called it FOUL. Oh, brother....
point on the stepping on the plate thing was that what is the chance that this actually happened since none of us have seen it done or called in years.
Been coaching for 12 years and have never, not even when I try to get it called, have I ever seen a batter called out for stepping on the plate while batting or bunting. In our recent High School game vs. Watterson, saw it called 3 times!
Isn't that the correct call?
The plate is in fair territory. Just like a slapper being out of the box when contact is made...........or have I just proven I do not know the rules?;&
Batter in the front of the box. The third baseman was playing in front of the bag by 8'. Hits a ball that strikes the ground fair and then bounces into the third baseman's glove 3' beyond into foul territory. The umpire doesn't call anything so the third baseman tosses the ball to first and the batter/runner is call out.
The umpire stated that the ball established itself fair so it was fair until it hits the ground.......... This was a varsity section game with 'qualified' umpires, the field umpire backed up the plate umpire during the rather heated discussion. The discussion was rather amusing in that both coaches were arguing that it was a foul ball.
Sorry, but...ummm...no.
It depends on where the ball is first touched in relation to the foul line. As described, this would clearly be a foul ball.
