The article about Tichner's quest to make the Olympic team was a complete whitewash of the facts, of course. There was exactly ONE spot available for a pitcher when Tichner went to the tryout-- and even that spot was taken.

Oh, I don't think Tincher thought that the odds were good that she'd make the Olympic team. She even said as much by saying it wouldn't shock her if she didn't make the team. Still, it has to supply some motivation to face the team that cut you. ;)

Absolutely, she was motivated! Threw a no-hitter. One walk from a perfect game. So, what a horror story it is for anyone who thinks Team U.S.A. is anything but a very private club team! Sure, you can't go wrong with most of the players on that team, but you can't tell me you couldn't replace each one of them (other than Bustos) with someone of equal or greater talent.

Here's the best example (besides Tincher) I can think of: Norell Dixon, who plays 3rd base for the Racers. In my mind, she's the best player in the country. Great glove. Strong arm. Super fast. Slaps or hits for power from the left side. Nearly impossible to throw out on a ground ball unless it's a one-hopper to third. Every time she reaches, it's a double because she can steal virtually at will--even on the best arms.

Sometimes a loss is a good thing, it will get team USA refocused, they know now that the wins are not automatic just because they show up, they still have to go out there and give 100%.

Better it happen in a meaningless game against VT then at a world cup game

We were at the game. We were behind home plate and Tichner was throwing at 70 - 72 mph with an amazing rise ball. The Olympic players were really struggling to put the bat on the ball. Jennie was called on an illegal pitch which moved a VT runner from 2nd to 3rd in turn setting up the run.

VT also was able to get some keys hits against Finch (4 hits) and Ostermann (2 hits). And a fielding error by the Olympic team didn't help.

The games will be televised on April 22nd on ESPN2. ESPN recorded all 4 games in Oklahoma City.

Taking time off to start a family is not a shame. And neither is not being able to get back in top form at age 37. Let the younger kids play now.
