Bret tell me if I am wrong. We had a girl get called out in "championship play" for throwing a bat after hitting a double. As an umpire I have called a player out for this but she threw it into a catcher who was trying to field the ball. This made it easy. The play I am talking about the girl let it go in her follow through. I looked it up in the book.... Am I missing something or is the rec ball mind set coming into the ASA. This would have put the go ahead run on base. We still won, but I would have hated to have lost on a made up rule.

This is the only thing I could find on throwing the bat.

Rule supplement #52: When a player throws a bat in anger, the player should be ejected. Should the bat slip from the players hands, there is no penalty unless the discarded bat prevents the defense from making a play on the ball, and then interference should be called.
There is no penelty when the player carries s bat to first base or any other base. Should the player use the bat to prevent a defensive player from making a play, then interference should be ruled.

I believe "throwing the Bat" is one of those "league rules only for safety" and one of those "Myths" in other arenas. Unless it's a bunt type and she throws to block the ball from rolling purposely.

Did the bat hit a player? If it did then I will warn that team and if it happens again I will eject the player. Girls need to learn as soon as possible that just tossing a bat without regard to another players safty is a not accepted

Hilliarddad has this right. That throwing the bat is penalized by an out is a rule myth and a commonly misinterpreted rule. Some rec leagues may add this to their "house" rules, but it is not the standard ASA or high school rule.

For ASA a bat accidently being tossed by the batter has NO penalty! A bat purposely tossed, as in anger, is punishable by ejection- but, again, it's still not an out!

Calling the batter out on this play would be a 100% protestable call and one the offended team would easily win.

Dont think it has anything to do with ASA, more of a personal evaluation and the fact it's travel so throwing a bat after hitting is annoying and eventually unsafe. I'm assuming the batter had been warned or had thrown it before. Take it as learning lesson and teach the child to hit and not throw the bat on release. Make her carry it with her to first base until she gets the hang of hitting the ball without throwing the bat. Glad it didn't cost you the game!!

It may be annoying and sometimes happens out of excitement and adreniline but its still a child and by calling her out was wrong. It effected her the rest of the game. Good call ICEVIPER

I knew a coach who used to wrap a dollar bill around the handle during practice and let the child keep it when she learned to hang onto it....
