Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Chanting at the pitcher legal or not?

... There's a thread in here talking about terrible baserunning in college ballgames. Seems to me, if they learned the proper baserunning skills young... instead of the words for a cheer... they'd be better off :lmao:

The baserunning mistakes I saw were mostly at 3rd base, when the player had her back to the coach, and was in "no man's land". Ironically, I think the coaches were using voice commands (BACK, BACK, BACK!) when they got in trouble. Others were hesitations (lack of aggressive base running) that got them into trouble. And don't forget the bonehead mistakes the coaches were making - and they don't even know the cheers!

As the NCAA field gets whittled down, I think we'll see much less of those mistakes - AND better coaching. And of course - we'll see some of the BEST cheering that college ball has to offer!! :yahoo: Can't wait!!

Ok! This is definitely not a Golf Game or Bowling where everyone goes into a hush mode you know, even to the point where the Announcer's are whispering the play by plays. I enjoy the creativity of those young ladies who come up with those Chants and Cheers. They're kinda catchy! As a matter of fact they get in my head and I'm repeating their words on the drive back home.

Now! I will however say this, I do not like any Chants or Cheers that are degrading or demeaning to the opposing team or the ones that grow Louder as the pitcher is about to deliver. Chant and Cheer for your own team in a positive way. No problem!

Taunt, Ridicule, or Demean or behavior in any manner not in accordance with the spirit of the fair play a warning will be issued there after restricted to the bench/dugout or ejected depending on the severity.

FASTPITCH! Anything else, And you're playing too SLOW!

Bretman or anyone else- got another question for you. Had a couple teams, while on defense, slap their gloves in unison until the pitcher released the ball. Any rule on that?

There's no specific rule about slapping gloves. This falls under the catagory of umpire discretion. If he judges that it is a tactic designed to distract the hitters, he could address it. He might judge it as unsporting behavior. Then again, if nobody's complaining and just accepting it as a normal part of the game, he might just let it go.

Calls involving if something is distracting or unsportsmanlike always are at the umpire's discretion. You can't really come up with a definitive list of all possible acts that might be distracting or unsportsmanlike. The rules give the umpires pretty wide leeway in these instances and leave it to their individual judgment. They could ask a team to refrain from this behavior or just let it go- or anything in between depending on the situation.

Sitting on the sidelines watching a game a parent may lean over and ask me the count... I may say 'two-two' and invariably one of us will mutter 'whatcha gonna do'.............

And thank you for the calls on taunting - if kids do that - shame on them.

Can't get the song out of your head... It has happened to me a couple times.

I've actually gotten out with a couple 12u teams and they taught me their dance on the foul lines...LOL

I just think that after 12u... there are more things to concentrate on besides cheers. It has disheartened me to hear that colleges do cheers.

How juvenile is that !!!!!:lmao:

I just witnessed chanting I had never heard before. Defensive team chanting Hey Batter, Hey Batter and then when ball is delivered players and parents yelling swing. Is that considered unsportsmanlike? The umpire said it was not against the rules and let it continue through the game. Just a question because I never heard it before.

I dont like the watch the pitcher chant or cheer, and I dont let me kids do it. It just bugs me lol.

Love cheering, keeps the kids in the game IMO. When my middle kid attends my oldests games (18u) she leads the parents in all those lil 10u cheers. Its kind of funny because you normally see the other team smiling or will get a positive comment from the other teams coaches, I think secretly the older kids and coaches miss those cheers.

If i'm coaching a base by the other teams dugout I usually request a cheer or two.All in fun of course. They usually do it for me too. It's a game lighten up. Remember your here to help the girls play the game and have FUN and if cheering is fun then so be it. Sometimes coaches forget that the only reason they are here is for the girls and the love of the game and cheering is part of the game.

We have told our girls from day one: You cheer for your teammates, not against the other team. That being said, every now and then we have had to stop a cheer here and there because we felt it was unsportsmanlike or was possibly bothering the pitcher beyond the norm.
