How in the world can they dictate where you stay??? Seems pretty pushy and annoying to me.

Point taken. But we have usually gotten good hotels (Embassy Suites, etc) in these situations for a decent price. Don't know that going to another tournament is a real option, as Signature Midwest is a viable alternative to flying to Florida, Arizona, or California for fall exposure events. I'd really like this event to continue with its rapid growth. If we have a good college exposure event in the fall here, in the long run it will add up to oodles of money saved for Ohio families.

They claim that by using their hotels, they are able to pay for the rooms of the colleges coaches. If this is true, then it is a good trade-off... its because of the college coaches that we go to these types of tournaments.
As of today, they were out of rooms and said we were on our own. The prices they were offering were respectable.

Well, that's good that there won't be any housing charge; at least I think that is what sgf67 is saying.

Again, most exposure tournaments have some kind of similar requirement regarding hotels. When JoeA's team went to Florida, for Rising Stars, both years we had the same requirement. I'd like to "walk with my feet" as Sammy advises, but if this tournament continues to take off and college coaches continue to attend, I think that the hotel requirement will be a small price to pay. Plus it doesn't look like it is being enforced and it looks like the hotel prices are reasonable.

There are a ton of good teams and a ton of college coaches attending this tournament. We've never had a fall exposure camp in central Ohio with this kind of reach. I'm rooting for this tournament to get bigger and bigger.

I could be wrong but I believe Compuware also requires you use their hotels.

A lot of times it is a good benefit to be affiliated with the tournament you are attending. If your team has a bad weekend you can check out early with no penalty whereas if you stay on your own you pretty much are stuck that needless extra night.

Have used the Microtel and Red Roof at Grove City. Microtel was decent. Red Roof permitted dog.

I have booked rooms through the Zenith Group on several occassions in the past and they have always done a great job. They found a place at the right price, in the right spot and they have always been very nice facilities. My understanding is the guy that runs it goes to inspect every motel before he puts them on his list.

As a general rule, motels will donate one room for every 10-12 that are booked. I assume that is how they are getting rooms for the coaches. Since the college coaches will be in the same motels that the Zenith Group is booking for the teams, I would assume they will be nice facilities.

I believe that you are right about Compuware.

Good points. The places we stayed in Florida were very nice. Never occurred to me that booking through the tournament's housing agent was creating rooms for college coaches. I learn something new from OFC almost every day.

Not sure of the age group and how much free time you have. Fort Rapids is very nice (stay in the new part). They have an indoor water park, nice resturant/bar.

It creates rooms for college coaches and umpires. Some motels are : sell 10 and get one free.

What I do is not take the kickback from the motels.. asking them to lower their prices for the parents... and then taking the one free room for my out of town umpires. Clermont Convention and Visitors Bureau has always been great with these arrangements.

Something else you might want to consider as well... The Sports Commission will PAY you to bring in big tournament to Columbus. This can be thousands of dollars actually.

So a TD going through a booking agent can have a RECORD of how many "butts in a bed" you have sold to the teams entering your event..... and if you have a successful year.. then that is more money in your pocket come the following year when you negotiate the terms for bringing your event to the city.

It's done every day.. whether it is hockey, in-line hockey ( huge in the US), S O C C E R events, baseball, whatever...

There's a lot of reason for using a booking agent that many don't know about ;)

I just think the kickback is a little much in my opinion.. but to each their own.

I seen a tournament in Columbus.. where the rates went up $30.00 per room for that certain weekend.

NOW THAT'S SOME KIND OF KICKBACK !!! :lmao:

We always stay at the redroof inn in grove city! Very nice and only 49.99 a night has rooms with fridge and microwave. If it is in the summer they have a nice outdoor pool that has a roof that cover part of the pool........... and there is a new batting cage right across the street and any type of food and store you would imagibe is right there.....

We were at an older Country Inn an Suites (airport one) and it was great. Reasonably priced w breakfast and offered a shuttle to take us anywhere we wanted. We were about 15 minutes from the field and shopping. Perfectly located I thought. Safe and clean.

I hope we are not going into another bashing like we did about York, PA.

Not intending to bash either!! We love Berliner! My dd has played there 3 times in the last 2 season and we would go back for sure....I just think the area we were in may not have been looked into well enough. We were about 15 minutes from Gahanna. I want to say Gardendale???

We have stayed at the Country Inn & Suites for the past 3 yrs and we will keep going back. Kristin is great to work with and the hotel has been excellent every time. It is only about 10 mins away from the park. Wal Mart is on the same exit along with many restaurants.

The prices at Compuware have always been fair and I think they get free rooms for umpires(not sure about college coaches)

For what it's worth, here is a link to the list of hotels listed on the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department web site. I believe each offers a discount for events at Berliner. The one at Rickenbacker may be a little far, but the others are reasonably close.
