Alright, hopefully this is the last revised schedule. We've made some slight changes to the 12U schedule to accomodate some far away travelers who had some conflicts. Please take note of your team's game times. Only a limited few game were impacted. All coaches should recieve a revised schedule in their e-mail.

Thanks, Mike

Bruce: Great job this weekend. The Doom girls put on a hitting clinic this weekend . We were very proud of our girls going 5-1 with our only loss to the Doom '96. The "results board " was a little hard to follow at times, but I know the top three results for the 12U division.
1st - Cincy Doom '96 6-0
2nd - Central Ohio Lady Vipers 5-1
3rd - Ohio Wave ( Blue ) 4-2

Hopefully Ohio Wave will have the final results posted for all divisions shortly.

We wish each and everyone one of you the best this winter as you prepare for next season and we can't wait to see you all in the Spring.

We had a great weekend with a lot of excellent competition. I am very proud of our team and their performance, as we are not only young, but newly formed. We played a fine Wizards team in the championship game and just fell a bit short. All in all, still very proud.
If one of the Wizards coaches would drop me a PM and let me know how your pitcher is, I'd really appreciate it. She did a fine job in both games this weekend, and compliments to the young lady who stepped in to pitch after your stater got hurt. Best of luck in the coming season, hope to meet again. :)
It was nice to play a full 7 innings as you really got a chance to see what your team was made of. It truly is a different game at 7 innings as opposed to 5 or so in the hour and 10 minute games.
A big thank you to TD Jerrod, Rich, and Erin for putting on such a nice tournament, as well as, Mike for taking care of our t-shirts and hoodies! I know we're part of it all, but all we really had to do was show up, so thanks again.

To our ladies, great job!

First time I have had the opportunity to play in Greenville. The facilities at Stebbins field were adequate, and possibly after the upgrades that they are working on it will be better. A few areas that need to be addressed...

1. Restrooms! There were 4 porta potty's trying to support use from at least 12 different teams. They were full by the end of the day Saturday, and were out of paper by mid day on Sunday. People were having to leave the facilities to use the restroom, because they were in such bad shape. With that many teams, at least have them pumped and cleaned out Sunday morning.

2. $375 and all we get is one umpire! At the 16U level with 5 teams, not counting your 15U team, you brought in $1875 and paid out around $700 in umpire fees, profiting close to $1200 in just our tourney fees. This was an ASA Eastern Qualifier, and no Qualifier should ever be played with less than 2 umpires.
I normally don't get to worked up about umpires, but the umpire that worked field one all day on Saturday was by far the worst umpire I have seen in my 12 years of coaching softball!! The umpire on Field 2 during the 9am game did a decent job until he made a few calls that he basically had to guess on from 90 feet away, and then started arguing with the other teams coaches and fans for nearly 5 minutes, loosing control of the game, and wasting time. Umpire for our 11am game on field 1 did a good job and probably was the best umpire we had all weekend, again considering he had to work the game alone. And the umpire for our 3pm game did a decent job as well.
If games are going to be umpired with only one man, we won't be back!! I hear that this is the norm with the Wave tourneys.

3. Never will be a fan of playing on BB or slowpitch fields with 275+ foot fences. Any ground ball hit in the gap is a HR, and puts every team at a disadvantage. Balls that should have been singles for some girls turned into triples and HR's. OF's had to play at 200 foot to keep balls from getting past them.

4. By the end of the day on Sunday we were using day old balls, and I actually had to pull a ball out of our bucket to use because the balls were in such bad shape.

There were some great teams and some good competition, and it was nice to get on the field again before snow flies, but after driving close to three hours to play in an ASA Qualifier, I left feeling shortchanged, and that I hadn't really gotten my moneys worth.

LK,

I'll try to address a few things but I can get into the specifics of the happenings at Greenville because I was at Arcanum for the weekend.

First as far as profit goes, it is not as much as you think. The Wave does not own nor operate the Stebbins complex. We also do not operate the concession stand. All monies generated from Stebbins goes to the local Greenville rec program. The only money the Wave recieves from the tournament is from fees and what little money we can make from apparel. Out of the $1200 profit, we have to pay for complex rental, insurance, ASA fees, balls, etc. It's all of the other little things that get you. There is not as much money left over as you might think.

Second, When we were looking at the format, we made the decision to try something new. Longer game times so you could get full games in. There is alway a tradeoff in anything you do. Longer game times with more games (6) meant less revenue, i.e. the decision to fly with one umpire.

Third, I'm not a big fan of porta-pots either. This be addressed next summer with the new concession building. Still could have been pumped if they were as bad as you said. We'll address that with the complex people.

Fourth, Ump quality - can't comment because I wasn't there.

Last - Big fields. I agree. I would love to always play on regulation fenced fields but it is simply is not going to happen very much in Ohio. Maybe it does more for 16U and 18U but more often than not we (12U) play on fields that are fenceless, even in the big tournaments (Stingrays, GAPPS, Sluggerfest, Toledo Tune-Up)

Finally, believe it or not, we do appreciate your feedback. This is a new format that we wanted to try to see if is do-able or makes sense. This was a test run to iron out the bugs, see what works and what doesn't and try to hone in a good tournament. We still feel that more games with longer time limits is the way to go. It may just take some trial and error to find the right balance.

I'm curious to get some feedback from the teams that played in Arcanum, What suggestions, complaints, compliments do you have.

Mike.

I really liked the longer games, it was nice to play full games for once. And the competition was great, there were some very good teams there!

The competition was awesome, I thought that the fields were in good condition considering there has not been much rain there for a while. Nice to see every game actually start on time and the time and the full games rocked.

It will be nice next year at Stebbins Field when that new concession stand and restroom building is complete. The porta jons will not be missed.

The Arcanum complex was well run and we didn't have any issues with start times or concessions or bathrooms. Games were on time, if not a few minutes early. I would have liked to have seen 2 umpires as well, there were a couple of calls that were missed that the Ump couldn't see at second from Home plate. I would have also liked to have seen them rotate from field to field, or given a game off and not work 6 games in a row.

Mike: Only because you are asking for input :)

( A ) We felt the full game venue was awesome. Gave us as a team a chance to be a little more aggressive on the bases or do some things that wouldn't normally be done because you didn't know if you would have a chance to get back up again. Plenty of room for tents and warm ups.
( B ) Indoor bathroom was great but there was a constant line at the girls restroom. Some of us had back to back games and getting the girls ( whole team ) to the restroom and back to the field in time to start the next game was a challenge. Might consider 1 extra portable for women only to help speed the womens line along - could even make both indoor restrooms for women only and put the men in a portable .
( C ) Alternate umpires between games. Teams with back to back games on the same fields had the same umpire for both games. Upset the umpire the first game - might not call the second game as fair as a new umpire would. NOT THAT THAT WOULD HAPPEN ;&
( D ) A little disappointed with the 12U award ceremony or lack of one. :(
At the conclusion of the Doom "96 & Wave Blue game we were handed a box and a plaque with a here you go. The Doom was done the same way. After playing hard all weekend and finishing #1 & #2 out of 7 teams an award "ceremony" on the diamond in front of the players & parents would have been a nice touch. A chance for the Doom girls & the Viper girls to congratulate each other and get team pictures taken together. Instead we handed out our "Dog Tags" to the players under a tree out in the middle of no where and announced our players to the parents of our players. I know that you guys were trying to get the fields ready for the 10U finals but we could have gone over to field 3 or 4 and had a touchy feel good moment.

Other than a few minor things, the tournament was awesome and we were able to learn a lot about our team that weekend. Keep up the hard work. We may be back in spring tournament. Oh yea - maybe you could put in a word to the Comfort Inn to have friendlier & happier employees :lmao:

Again - Only because you asked.

Whoever ordered the championship t-shirts has never seen the size of our girls. We started handing them out and realized we had a few adult smalls and the rest were youth larges. Mike and the Wave group are taking care of that for us, but we just thought it was funny when the girls were holding them up.

Was very surprised with the one umpire per game. A few calls were missed on the bases, but no big deal. The calls usually even out in the long run, but we would prefer to play with two.

The fields at Arcanum were very nice and the Wave volunteers did a great job in getting the fields ready.

Thanks to Rich, Mike, and the rest of the Wave family.

Brian,

Thanks for the feedback. Actually, on Sunday night, we did discuss some of the things you mentioned.
  • Rotating the umpires from field to field: When we scheduled them it just looked cleaner and less confusing on paper if they knew for example, they had diamond #1 all day. Moving the umps across diamonds is probably the better way to go. As far as them doing every game in row, that was their decision. Most guys said give me all you have. I think they felt that with games scheduled every two hours they would have ample time to grab a sandwich and chill a little before the next game. Actually some umps had an hour between games if the game was a mercy.
  • Port-a-pots are an idea but it has been my experience that women will wait for a restroom before they use a port-a-pot. Still, it is a valid question.
  • 12U ceremony: Talk to one of you coaches, I think it was their decision to just take the dog-tags and not do a little presentation. We asked them what they wanted to do. With the round robin format we didn?t actually know for sure that the winners would be playing the last game. We thought we might actually have to mail the stuff to a team if they ended up the winner but had left already. Now, as far as the ?dog-tags,? They are not what we ordered for runner-ups, The company shipped the wrong items. They were supposed to be fairly large medals. We were not happy with the dog-tag necklaces.
Thanks for your feedback. The coaches/parents I?ve talked to seemed to like the long games and number of games. We?ve got a few things to tweak but I think it is a format we roll with. I still prefer it to 70 minute games.

Congrats Doomer on the rematch with the Vipes. You guys are out of the gate fast and really setting the bar for 12u powerhouse teams. Too funny on t-shirt sizes…….

Nice feeling to have the sticks working this early! Not sure one or two umpires makes that much of a difference looking at your scores…..when you crush the ball and get stand up singles, doubles, triples, etc., it gets pretty clear on kid being safe or out.

Anyone have an update/thoughts on 10u results and powerhouse teams?

Good day!!

John: Those shirts were pre-ordered for our Team ;& Actually - Probably would of had a few shirts that were TOO BIG :lmao:. Enjoyed our game with you guys and are looking forward to the summer schedule. You have a great group of athletes and played with dignity. Good Luck to all the Doomers.

12U ceremony: Talk to one of you coaches, I think it was their decision to just take the dog-tags and not do a little presentation. We asked them what they wanted to do. With the round robin format we didn?t actually know for sure that the winners would be playing the last game. We thought we might actually have to mail the stuff to a team if they ended up the winner but had left already. Head coach did state that that was the decision that was made by the coaches. If we had played the original posted schedule we would have had played our last game at 1:00 and would have had to hang around until after the last game was played. Not really a big deal just would have been a little fluff for a long weekend.

Now, as far as the ?dog-tags,? They are not what we ordered for runner-ups, The company shipped the wrong items. They were supposed to be fairly large medals. We were not happy with the dog-tag necklaces.

Belive it or not - the girls actually thought the tags were pretty kool . I know my DD was excited about them and was going to wear hers to school ;).

Overall a very well run tournament. Wouldn't think twice about not coming back.

Just a quick note on the restrooms at the Stebbins Feild complex. This was the last time that we will ever have to deal with the porta-jons there as the new concession stand / restroom building will be completed in the next few months. From what I understand the womens restroom in that building will have either 6 or 8 stalls so that should not be an issue there at all. As for the Arcanum complex that was a last minute change for us and we have never held any of our events there before. That decision was literally made 7 to 10 days before the tournament and we appeciated everyones help in making that work. As it turned out things went pretty good there and I agree that (at least where the ladies are concerned) waiting in line definately beats the porta-jon experience.

Thanks for everyones input.

On the 10u side of things I thought it was a very nice tournament. It was nice that the girls were able to get in full games and the coaches were able to move some people around and see some different things with the longer games.

Not sure on any of the results other then the Championship games was won by the Heart of Ohio Nitro over the Ohio Fire by a score of 11-0. The Nitro went 6-0 on the weekend. Good Job Ladies.
