OHSAA question playing out of State

hypothetical question only-

My daughter will be eligible to play middle school softball ball next year (7th grader). The program is OHSAA sanctioned. Here is the question- IF she were to play middle school softball, and also played in a softball tournament in Texas for a Texas travel softball team over spring break, would that violate OHSAA rules? Assume that the softball tournament would be held during the middle school softball season.

Wonder if anyone has any experience with out of state play and OHSAA??

Once your daughter is in a OHSAA sanctioned program she can't play the same club sport during the same season unless her middle school coach releases her for the rest of the season prior to the tourney in Texas. If she does that then she can't come back and play for the middle school team. So she'd pretty much be off the team.

I think you guys are right- The way i read the OHSAA rules on non-school teams (i.e. travel, elite, select) is that the out of State designation doesn't matter....it is still participation in a contest with a non-school team while a member of a school team in the same sport during the school season.

Could the player play OHSAA after the travel tournament if they don't play in an OHSAA contest before it?

4.1) A member of an interscholastic softball squad (any student who has played in a scrimmage, preview or regular season/tournament game as a substitute or starter) sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing board shall not participate in a non-interscholastic program (tryouts, practice or contest) as an individual or as a member of a team in the sport of softball during the school?s season (Sports Regulation 4.3).

I always thought that rule was crazy when I lived in Ohio. Florida doesn't have that rule and it really doesn't impact teams at all. HS coaches try to regulate it within their own teams, but realistically they have no say in the matter. The parents are in control of their kids activities.

Yes she can. But that opens up a can of worms about selecting the MS team and then adding someone mid-season.

ONLY if your 7th grade and 8th grade are sanctioned. Our 7th grade wasn't, however, our 8th grade was. Spring break is when majority of schools have already started their season so she won't be able to play for the travel team, much less practice with them. IF you're for sure that your 7th grade is sanctioned, then no, can't play, but if they're not, she can play with her school, practice/play with her travel team (just harder to do so because of the school team schedule will probably conflict a great deal).

This is why sanctioning Middle school ball teams with school funding is just plain nuts.

Especially when it gets OHSAA involved at an early age. Bad enough the rules and regulations while they are in high school .

School sanctioned ball... and travel coaches going nuts because over 1/2 the kids can't practice. Spent all Fall playing in the tournaments and all winter practicing indoors and playing and then come spirng and nothing. Hard to even get 5 girls to practice legally and then come the release time from middle school ball.. and the summer tournaments begin.

Why in the world anyone would want OHSAA involved in JH ball and regulated just amazes me actually.

Lot of younger aged group coaches just shake their head too .

I can't help but wonder if that will be one of the questions used this August at tryouts.

Do you play middle school ball?

Is it club or school sanctioned?

Yes, it's my understanding that the girl wouldn't be able to play that tournament in Texas if the JH's season has started. State of Washington also doesn't have this silly rule and everybody seems to be fine with that. They think it's ridiculous when I tell them about Ohio's restrictive rule. Even the high school coaches out there have no problem with it.

In Missouri, they play school ball in the summer so they have to choose school ball or travel ball.

I have to wonder if the schools don't play weekends.. just during the week.

I watch a HUGE event in Kansas City, MO couple years back.

Happened to drive by and seen ballfield lights  Can't pass up ballfield lights for some reason

I absolutely agree. Jr High sanctioned programs are silly. Dunno why anyone would want to set that up other than a coach and a school wanting to waste more tax dollars.

There was a golfer is SW Ohio who after soliciting and receiving approval from OHSAA to play in a Pro/Am Charity golf event in CA, was deemed ineligible by OHSAA after he played in the charity event. So OHSAA should really be called UHSAA...I do not believe they should have jurisdiction over ANYTHING outside of Ohio...

if everyone were to play club and school ball at the same time what could OSHAA do suspend everyone and declare all schools ineligible. The people have the power to change things, if and only if they stick together..Just an idea.
