I know this is gonna open a can of worms, but I am really confused about a rule in the OHSAA rule book... Go figure someone being confused about the OHSAA... So here it goes...

10.2) Any coach, paid or volunteer, shall be approved by the Board of Education to coach basketball, ice hockey, baseball or softball and is prohibited from any athletic or athletic-related
contact with squad members (i.e., physical fitness, weight training, open gym, etc.) in the same sport for the period of time ending with Labor Day and beginning four weeks prior to Labor Day. This includes any type of tryouts in or out of school for purposes of noninterscholastic competition. It also includes verbal contact which encourages, discusses or promotes any activity related to the sports named above.

That being said, why can't a High School coach in October coach his team in a HS softball fall ball game or indoor league?

I get confused too. Here's how I interpret it.

Why can't a HS coach have a fall ball team:

I think this might be covered by rule 4.8 of the Softball-specific rules:

4.8) In accordance with Sports Regulation 4.9, interscholastic softball coaches are prohibited from coaching their own interscholastic squad members in non-interscholastic softball except for 10 days from June 1-July 31.

Also, I think if you found somebody else to coach them for fall ball, they might be subject to the 4 player limitation discussed in rule 6-5.

6.5) Participating in Non-Interscholastic Programs Outside the Interscholastic Season ?Team Sports ? A member of an interscholastic squad in a team sport sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing board may participate in non-interscholastic contests, tryouts, training or practices prior to, and after, the school?s interscholastic season under the following conditions:
a) The number of interscholastic squad members from the same school on the non-interscholastic squad is limited to a maximum of 50% of the members of a team as defined in the playing rules of the sport. From June 1 through July 31 (in the sports of baseball and softball, the period is the Friday before Memorial Day-May 25 in 2012-through July 31) this restriction is not in effect, provided the squad members have concluded their school season. The 50% limitation is defined as follows for all OHSAA recognized team sports.

I think winter-indoor is different however because it isn't recognized as a non-interscholastic sport. I don't think the HS coaches can coach them, but I believe there is no limit to the number of girls from the same school that can participate. Here is rule 4.7:

4.7) Participation in indoor fast pitch softball is not a violation of OHSAA non-interscholastic Sports Regulation 4.5 if played indoors from November 1, 2010, through February 1, 2011, for student-athletes.

Here is a link to the general sports regs if you need it:

I'd be happy to hear other's views to support or contradict how I'm reading it.

Why do they have so many rules covering the same thing in 4 differnt places? Why dont they just say here are the rules for Tennis, So##ER, football, basketball, etc and then be done with it... having to search from 4.7 to 6.3 to 10.2 but refer to 5.8 is just crazy.... Do they do this in hopes of catching something wrong?
