44 girls came out ... we kept 14 each on varsity, JV and freshman teams ...

Just 24 at Thomas Worthington. In most years, we only get between 24 and 28. L-crosse, field hockey, select soccer seem to be too ingrained here for us to ever get much more. We haven't cut a girl in my six years there. Good thing most of our girls can play. We had tryouts on Monday and announced the teams that day.
Realistically, though, the coaching staff gets to know the girls earlier in middle school and younger. We'd probably get 30-35 to come out, but by ninth grade a lot of the girls see how they stack up against the travel ball girls and they opt for an easier sport in which to participate like l-crosse in the spring or specialize in field hockey in the fall.
