Poaching Players

Some bad analogies here in my mind ... as Klump and TEA have said, the difference is pretty much never between sisters of the poor and the national team ... but I also don't like the analogy to LeBron ... in his case, most agree that the issue was how he did it, not that he did it.

I think most everyone also agrees also that team-changing shouldn't happen mid-season with very rare exception. It is unfortunate that so many players make changes during the tryout process sometimes based on false promises, but at least that's the right time to do it. What I have an issue with is coaches sniffing around and proactively talking to players and families while they're still playing with their current teams in June and July. If the parents/players seek the coach out, that's another issue, though I'd highly recommend that be done on the QT and not be blatantly obvious to teammates and their families, or else you really risk destroying team chemistry. Coaches, if you have any class at all, stay away until their season is over!

That's funny. You say too many parents ride the backs of other players to try and get to the top. That's pointing out exactly what you would do. In order for the US Junior National Team to notice your DD she had to play with the Sisters Of The Poor. So you would ride the backs of those girls to get noticed by the national team and then step on them on your way up the ladder and out the door. And sounds like being proud of yourself the whole way. haha

You know, I wouldn't have a problem with that if when you joined the Sisters Of The Poor you were up front and honest and told them if something better comes along you would take it and be gone. If you let the Sisters Of The Poor decide if they want that as part of their team. But if you take a spot and just keep it in the back of your mind that you would book if the opportunity comes then you are being snaky. Fact is when you join a team for the following season you are committing to that team, to all those other girls and families. You can keep your word and finish the season, you can back stab your way to something better and just leave or be up front and honest and find a team that will offer you a spot after you were forthright about what could happen. Which do you pick?
Great response! How times have you also seen the "stud" picked up only to fill a role and/or sit the bench for team at Nationals?

CoachTEA those aren't "studs" those are "stubs", the stud-sub who doesn't perform as expected.

As previously posted, "Your word is your word." When I was young, there was a band that had a song that went something like, " Teach your children well. We must all have a code that we can live by." (C,S,N & Y). But, that was the early 70's and we have had a host of Presidents lie to us since then. So, basically, you decide. Do you want to try to teach that your word means something or, do you want your daughter to be President some day? Or, choice three, your daughter can be the President who turns things around because of what you taught her at twelve.

I started this thread with a simple question about how often the attempted poaching of players occurs....Let me just say that I am amazed first of all at some of the terrific responses the thread recieved both against poaching as it was stated, and for it in the all's fair in love and war sense. So for those of you who responded in that vein, thank you! Now secondly, this thread went places I could never have imagined! From a time not so long ago where a person's word was their bond, to the tragedy that befell the Native American people, and finally to Crosby Stills Nash and Young. There were post that made me think, post that made me laugh, and we even had someone challenging someone else, who I think might have been a woman, to a fight in the parking lot! This was all more then I could have asked for in a semi-rookies thread! So thank you all for entertaining me for the past week.

Most of share and throw out ideas and beliefs to share with our community. Right or wrong Conversation can and will lead off tangent at times, but I enjoyed reading and responding to this topic.
except for idle threat.

It is an entertaining thread. Usually doesn't get that interesting until January and February when we don't have much to do. Can't wait to see how entertaining it gets then. ha

Both my daughters have/are playing on pretty competitive teams. In all that time (6 years for one, 4 years for the other), only once was I aware of a coach that really "hard sold" a player to leave a team my daughter was on during the season... I am not counting the "hey your a great player and would love to see you at our tryouts next year," comments... I don't count those as poaching... more like early advertising for next years tryouts...

Is my head in the sand and this happen a lot.. it must based on the number of comments (and this topic comes up at least twice a year), but I swear I have only seen one instance where a coach tried to "poach" a player in 10 years... And it is not like my daughters have played on bad teams... They have/are playing for Buckeye Heat, Stingrays, Lasers, Classics...

Is it happening and parents and players are not saying anything to the other players on the team... you think they would mention it as they must of said "no" to the poaching coach...

Is there an unwritten rule that you poach from some teams but not others?

If poached coaches built a ship to good to jump from this topic wouldn't have started. Not all can...not all want to work so hard to get there. Coaches have to realize they own NOTHING other than teaching, communicating effectively, and working the lesson plan hard and per the team's needs. If a player gets the call...wish them good luck for he/she did what they could to learn from you and they see its time to go. No grudges, no ownership, and for god sakes learn from the "exit interview" and move on. And BTW, sign the dag gone release forms. If its about the girls...you would have studied hard, questioned/challenged the players and families hard at tryouts, and then go with your decision to build a deal so good no one wants to leave. Look in the mirror...at least some of it is your fault. For some more or less than others. Not everyone can keep every player. In some cases it's a good idea to leave, just do it during tryouts. Players have to look in the same mirror coaches do and parents just might have to parent first and be a friend second and make Sally stick it out. Even if it is August 31st. Rambled a bit...kinda like this thread.

If you try out for multiple teams with the thought "let's see what happens" and you get offers from all the teams its a decision you have to make. It happens all the time. I do not see it as Poaching Players. Do you not want your dd to play with the team that best fits her?Changes happen now all the way through June when the first tourny is played. Things happen, kids improve, kids decline, teams fall and things change. Have seen it for the last 12 years.
