scars from sliding

My dd has scars up and down her sliding leg (some look almost like tattoos, cuz they're permanently discolored with the red clay from some of the diamonds). :'(

While she is proud of her "battle scars", they can be a little unsightly with a nice skirt.

Here's my question---how come only the girls wear shorts to play? ?I know it's hot in the summer, but I don't think I've ever seen a boy's team showin' off their legs. ;)

Should the girls wear ball pants, too? The slide pads they wear don't seem to help that much. ?(Would like input from the girls, as well as others.)

They make sliding pads for this. You can then online or like a Dicks sporting goods. It really helps protect the legs

While we were in Alabama this year at the ASA Nationals quite a few teams from down south and out west wore pants in 90 + temps. Not only did they look sharp, I'm sure it saved a few nicks as well.

I have noticed from the last few tourney's I have been to the girls are starting to wear pants more and more.

Try having her wear a smaller size sliding short. It may look like it is cutting off the circulation, but it keeps them from moving up when they slide. ?That worked for us. ?
My DD has scars on the sides of her elbows from diving to stop a ball. ?We tried something new for that this week. ?We used 6inch sweat bands (wrist bands) and she had them up on her arms covering her elbows. That seemed to help a lot and didn't affect her throw of course she was more worried about that. ?We still haven't found a cure or solution for the front of her hip bones. ?Both of those always are bruised and tore up. ?I tried to talk her in to sticking some extra padding there, but she was to afraid it would fall out. Any suggestions. ?I try to pack on the extra pounds but not working :)

Last spring for Jr. High Spring ball my husband MADE his team wear baseball pants because it is so cold in NWO in April. Every girl complained until the first game when it was 45 degrees and they realized they could wear long underwear or two pairs of pants. Even when the temp. got warmer, they continued to wear those pants because THEY loved them. They felt much more comfortable sliding in them. My DD will tell you now that she loves baseball pants. Her Fall Ball team is wearing them and she is hoping that her travel team wears them next summer. She reasons that they are no hotter then shorts. Her knees are all scarred up and ugly and she is very consious of her bloody knees all summer. She has had to walk off the mound in the middle of pitching because her knee is bleeding and the ump makes her "fix it". She ends up wearing a pad covering her knee AND the sliding pad. This combined with tall socks and sliding shorts is hotter then just wearing pants in the first place.

My daughter is proud of her "battle" scars. Like you she is usually skinned up for most of the summer. Played Saturday at the Classics, wore a slider and still got her knee skinned. I can't think of anything to stop it entirely. Her high school team wears pants and they do help, but she can't wear her slider underneath and still gets skinned up knees. They do have sliders that are form fitting but they only go over the knee, almost like one of those knee braces you can buy at the drug store. Then that leaves her leg exposed.

i did see one team at the classics tourney wearing pants, they looked pretty sharp, pony tails and ribbons galore...maybe another team was wearing them too (doom?) but maybe it was just what she wore in between games...it does make sense as our girls do tend to get scraped up during a game..

We saw a team in Florida(from Florida) wearing baseball pants with sleeveless button down baseball jerseys to match. Boy did they look sharp! Their uniforms were the envy of all other teams down there.

As far as those "battle" scars- they don't look cool until the yellow and green puss clears up, and the ugly bloody scab falls off, which only happens if your DD happens to have a couple weekends off between tournaments. For our family, that's August!

At ASA Nationals in Sacramento I think the majority of teams wore long pants -- many of them black and in the 95 degree heat.
Oh, yeah, it was a dry heat ?;D

These are the words of my DD " Pants are for those SISSY baseball players" but I agree pants would save on their body in the long run

DD is proud of the battle scars. Homecoming was this past Saturday and after making a sliding catch in right field we had a brand new pretty one to show off in our dress.(she was quite proud of it and said that it was just typical for her to have scrapped up knees). DD's team saw alot of pants at ASA Nats (Normal) and thought the looked very sharp. They've mentioned it to their coach for next year but he didn't seem too thrilled

Not sure I could call the Lakewood Ladies or Corona Angesl sissies , but I appreciate your DD's sentiments.
My DD feels the same.

She said Sissy BASEBALL players I think she meant the boys in pants. I would NEVER call fastpitch softball ladies sissies

Played ball for many years and didn't feel that pants where more of an asset. ?Prefer to wear shorts and I wear sliding shorts and leg sliders. They do a better job than just the long pants. ?The pants have a tendancy of ripping up real quick and may not make it through a season. Our team uniforms are purchased with a two year life cyle. ?If we switched to pants, that wouldn't happen. ?And no, we are not sacrificing safety by all means. ?Here is a good leg slider from American Wave that we use and they come in long and short version. ?As well, the sliding shorts are exceptional too. The company will custom make to meet your team colours too.

My DD averages over a dozen stolen bases a weekend and thats a lot of new scabs and shredded socks and sliding pads help but she was getting torn up at the ankle pretty bad until we bought one of those elastic anke supports at CVS to go over the sock. I don't know how long it will hold up until it's shredded too but it's worked so far to stop the burn.

Where mine gets torn up the worst is on her outer thigh and some on her outer calf (seems like just huge areas get shredded, and always right over the same places every time). :'(

We've tried the longer and more padded slide shorts and tried wrapping with Ace bandages (didn't stay put for even a few innings).

I'm considering trying to whip up something on the old sewing machine, like a tight over-the-thigh slide pad with extra padding on the outer side. (Hmmm....maybe if it works, I'll patent it and make a million or so, and be able to be a stay-at-home mom and full time OFC poster.) ?

If thats where she's getting the damage then might I suggest the problem may be with her sliding technique? On a proper slide the bottom leg is tucked back protecting the upper leg to a certain degree so if she's exposed there in her slide then that may be most of the problem. Don't know for certain without seeing her slide so I'm only spectulating here.

As I tell my dd when she gets these wonderful strawberries..........."throw some dirt on it, it will heal. " :D

As for pants,my dd`s league team wore pants all summer. The only team in the North Coast League that wore them. The girls hated them! My daughter was very thankful that the Lady Irish wore shorts last summer (as all travel tournament teams).

Does seem like most of the division one college teams now wear pants in their games. The smaller school divisions wear shorts more often. Its about 50/50 for high school teams in my neck of the woods.

"Stay with the shorts" my wife just said, looking over my shoulder! >:( :D
