scars from sliding

hockeybuckeye---that very well could be the problem.

The damage is all on the right leg (the bottom one), and it looks like she probably goes down and hits on the hip/thigh area first. ?She is a "healthy/muscular" girl and that could be part of the issue. ?;)

Although, part of the problem could also be some of the crappy diamonds around here with the coarse gravel, instead of the fine clay, on the infields.

It always seemed like she was doing it right, but now, I don't know. ?:-/

(btw 3sportfan---dd has opted for the ankle-length dress for homecoming this Saturday.)

My daughter has scars on her back from one extemely crappy diamond. Someone had the brilliant idea of donating red brick to them. They crushed it up thinking it would help absorb water better. However, they didn't take into consideration that girls slide. Have you ever seen what crushed brick does to skin? YUCK! She slid in and got under the tag, but it scraped up her back and now she has scars.

It does sound like she's coming in on her side instead of vertical. The girls who come in vertical are usually the ones who do the "pop-up" slides. With the way girls nowadays roll their waistbands and don't tuck their shirts in well when they play is a major learning experience when they go for a head first slide too.

TurksMOM, try a volleyball website or catalog for something to protect the hip bones from diving.

Hey LakeErieHillbilly. Not sure what age bracket your DD is on but we did play a Lady Irish 10U team in Toledo Ohio this summer. Our girls where the Oakville Angels and they loved the Lady Irish team. In fact, they are still talking about those girls and how they cheered them on. We where probably the tiniest team in the tourney.

Anyhow, my previous post I talked about these very kewl sliding shorts that we purchased for our 10U and 14U teams from the U.S. this past season and still look like brand new. This might help some of you out with the rasberries on the thighs and I've had a few in my time. Yes, it's about sliding technique for sure, but sometimes it just doesn't happen. These sliders are made of lycra with a massive neopreme pad from the bottom cuff right up covering the full thigh and the harse... very good padding and light weight, the girls loved them. They even have the elastic grip tread on the bottom leg portion to prevent them from sliding up.

Last season my team (Lady Lasers Orange) wore pants and a sleeveless jersey. We will be wearing pants again this year. We saw plenty of teams in ASA nationals in Normal that wore pants as well (mostly western or southern teams). The girls only complained the first few games we wore them but after that they actually wanted to wear them. They looked very, very sharp. The Cincy Doom also wears pants.

I don't know if it will completely stop sliding "strawberries" but they should help. I would highly recommend wearing sliding shorts under the pants though too. At least the pants will not ride up like the shorts.

Pants also prevent those nice "farmer's tans" between your socks and shorts.

I imagine pants would help, but even with sleeveless shirts one would think it would be unbearable playing on days like we've done in the past when it's 105 degrees out. You see the majority of college teams wearing pants but their season starts when it's still cold out and ends by June. Of course pro teams do so during the summer but girls high school age tend to be complainers.

I have a pretty sweet scar on my leg from sliding. Ironically enough, I was wearing a sliding pad when it happened. I've only ever gotten "sliding scars" when I wore things that were supposed to protect me. I don't wear sliding pants or a sliding pad, and I haven't been injured once in three years.

The pants are making a comeback because that is what players are seeing the college teams wear during the college world series. The schools wear whatever gets them them best deal financially & the travel teams follow the fads.....

Yeah my daughter was on the 10u Irish team that played against your dd`s team in Toledo. I wasnt there that weekend due to I had to be in Tennessee that weekend. The wife had her up there that weekend while I was gone.
My dd enjoyed playing your team being that she never played a team from Canada before. She thought that was neat. She traded pins with one of the players and she still has it with her collection. While I was playing phone tag with the wife that weekend she told me all about the teams and mentioned yours. She did mention the size of the girls, ?. ?I saw a pic of the Oakville Angels on your website the following week. My daughter was the tallest girl on the team, number 18. She probably played 1st base that game.

The girls that played for the Irish 10U team last year were a great to be with, and to watch them progress from winter practices to the end of summer was amazing. They were a special group!
Hopefully we will see your team next summer in Toledo!

I like the shorts best. My DD has wore both the pants with one team and shorts with most all the other teams she played on. She did nothing but complain about the pants, They were hot, uncomfy and just plain ugly.
She has sliding shorts and pads to protect her when she slides.

Another one of her complaints was that she wasn't getting any sun to tan her legs when she was in the pants all day. In the shorts when they are at tournaments all day long they can take off the sliding pad and roll there socks down and get some sun on there legs so they aren't as white as a ghost all summer long.

I actually really like the pants, though I realize they're hot in the summer. They definately reduce leg injuries. I think they older the girls get, the more likely they are to wear long pants.

I did like the style of pants the college girls wore in the world series. I don't like the baseball pants on girls. They only look good on some major league baseball players.

They look good on some players, but not the managers! When are our travel ball coaches going to have to dress like the team? We couldn't have played an inning with my husband coaching in the team uniform because everyone would have been RITDL (rolling in the dirt laughing). ;D
