St. Ambrose started its 2020 softball season with its first of two Winter Dome Tournaments played in the Ambrose Dome. The Bees finished 1-3, dropping both games Saturday before splitting a pair of games Sunday.

Missouri Valley 7, St. Ambrose 5 - box score
A three-run sixth inning helped Missouri Valley rally for a 7-5 win in the first game of the weekend event. St. Ambrose had led 5-3 thanks to a four-run third inning that featured RBIs from Libby Munsterman, Madelyn Thompson, Grace Schmitz and Erica Ralfs. But the lead evaporated in the sixth as Missouri Valley pieced together five hits to push across the three runs to retake the lead. The Vikings pushed across an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Ella Specht took the loss in relief of Ralfs. Olivia McClintock collected three of the Bees' seven hits. Kayla Stenger plated Natalie Desmond with SAU's first run on an RBI groundout in the second inning.

Aquinas 3, St. Ambrose 2 (8 inn.) - box score
After not capitalizing on a bases-loaded situation in the top of the eighth, St. Ambrose suffered a 3-2 walk-off loss to Aquinas Saturday afternoon. Both teams had chances late. Erica Ralfs had a big strikeout to escape a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to get the game into extra innings. Playing as the visiting team, the Bees loaded the bases in the eighth. Madelyn Thompson singled but was erased on Libby Munsterman's fielder's choice groundball. Ralfs and Grace Schmitz were hit by pitches to fill the bases but pinch-hitter Sophia Delgado struck out to end the threat. Aquinas took advantage. A lead-off double was followed by an intentional walk. After a sacrifice bunt, another intentional walk loaded the bases before a lined single to deep right gave the Saints the win. Logan Frerichs had three hits, including an RBI single in the third that tied the game at 1-1. Schmitz hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score Olivia McClintock to tie the game at 2-2, which ultimately forced extra innings. Colleen Barrett had two hits in the loss. Ralfs was charged with the loss in relief of Jane Thomas.

St. Ambrose 15, Missouri Valley 5 (5 inn.) - box score
The St. Ambrose offense exploded for 13 hits and 15 runs in a 15-5 win in five innings over Missouri Valley in the Bees' first game of the day Sunday. Logan Frerichs led the attack, finishing 4-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Libby Munsterman was 3-for-3 and Colleen Barrett and Madelyn Thompson each had two hits. All three of those Bees drove in two runs. After scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, SAU fell behind 3-2 in the second. In the bottom of the frame, St. Ambrose took advantage of two Missouri Valley error to plate four runs for a 6-3 lead. The Vikings got one back in the fourth before the Bees exploded for a nine-run fourth of their own. The Bees pounded out seven hits and drew four walks in the inning. Ella Specht was the beneficiary, earning the win in relief of Jane Thomas.

Saint Xavier 7, St. Ambrose 1 - box score
After exploding for 15 runs earlier in the day, the Bees were silenced in a 7-1 loss to Saint Xavier. St. Ambrose managed just four hits and struck out 13 times. The Cougars scored in each of the first three innings, building a 6-0 lead before the Bees got on the board in the sixth. Madelyn Thompson's second hit of the game, a two-out double scored Logan Frerichs, who reached on an error, to cut the margin to 6-1. But Saint Xavier answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to account for the final score. Erica Ralfs was tagged with the loss. Ella Specht allowed one run over the final 3 1/3 innings in relief.

The Bees will host Mount Marty in the Ambrose Dome Friday before hosting the second Winter Dome Tournament next Saturday and Sunday.
