The sixth inning was more than unkind to the Bees.

St. Ambrose let leads slip away late in losing a doubleheader at Culver-Stockton by scores of 9-6 and 4-2 Wednesday afternoon. The Bees, who will open CCAC play Friday, dropped to 15-9 overall.

In the opener, SAU rallied from an early 3-0 deficit. A two-run home run from Morgan Krieger in the third inning brought the Bees to within a run, and an inning later, RBI hits from Olivia McClintock and Christina Pembrook pushed St. Ambrose in front 4-3. Pembrook had another RBI double in the sixth before Madelyn Thompson followed with a run-scoring double of her own to push the lead to 6-3.

But it all fell apart in the bottom of the inning. Culver-Stockton sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring six runs on six hits, for a 9-6 lead. Six of the Wildcats' 12 hits came in that sixth inning. St. Ambrose was retired in order in the seventh to end the game.

Pembrook was charged with the loss to spoil her 4-for-4 performance at the plate. McClintock, Krieger and Jasmine Bowman each had two hits.

SAU struck first in the second game. Pembrook continued her hot hitting with an RBI single in the third. Later in the inning on a double steal, Pembrook took second and McClintock came in to score for a 2-0 lead.

The lead remained two runs until the bottom of the sixth.

The Wildcats, who had collected just six hits through the first five innings, put together four hits to plate four runs in their final at bat.

McClintock started the seventh with her third hit of the game, but the next three Bees were retired to end the game.

Jane Thomas was charged with the loss.

Briana Olson was 2-for-3 in the nightcap.

SAU is next scheduled to open conference play at home Friday against Saint Xavier. The first game from St. Vincent's is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
