Too Many Teams, Not Enough Playing!

Hi. I seem to be having an issue with coaches or teams or something. Help?

5 years ago I made the decission to move out of rec ball and tryed out for my city's OGSO team. I made it with flying colors. We played an indoor winter leauge and my coach put me in all sorts of places and had me bat somewhere diffrent each game. In the summer I played the bench and on the rare chance he put me in for a whole inning, i batted last.

The next year I played OGSO again with my coach I had in my last year of rec ball. I wanted to pitch and play 2nd. His daughter pitched and there was a girl who couldnt play that well that he put on 2nd because she couldnt play outfeild.

The year after I played OGSO and tournament ball. The tourney team was super expensive and very time consuming and the OGSO team's head coach went on all the fastpitch blogs she could find for new pitchers before she even saw any of us pitch. The tourney team ahd a set infeild and centerfeild and there were about 5 of us that switched right and left feild and the bench.

This year I played only tourney ball and in all of the games, switched between 2nd, short, and outfeild (I gave up pitching) in winter leauge and batted as lead-off, second, or third batter (and got on most of the time) but in the summer my coach played me only in right or left and batted me 6th. Eventually it moved to sitting and outfeild and I batted last.

I never copped an attitude with any of these coaches, I was always trying my hardest and giving it my all and I always batted well, but it never seemed to work out! Am I doing something wrong or is it just poor coaching?

I think just by the sounds of it, poor coaching. When a coach plays their kid first when their kid is not that good then they are coaching for the wrong reasons. Our coach will sit any girl that is not doing well, and we will play girls wherever it will help the team the most. Get out of OGSO.

To Parma Wildcats: Thats awesome because I'm planning on trying out for your team! And to Uber: OGSO is Ohio Girls Softball Oganization. It's pretty much a leauge between rec and travel

Uber, OSGO is rec league that's suppose to be for players within a township or zone. Its really big in Portage, Trumbull and Mahoning counties. In my own school district there are 3 different teams with age groups from 8u-18u. They play other OSGO teams in their zone. I actually thought it be illegal to hold tryouts for these teams.

Softballchik, sorry to hear of your bad experiences. Go to a few different tryouts and have fun with no worries. Just make sure before you accept any offer you ask what your role on that team will be. and the teams that do not make an offer, politely ask the coach what it he/she feels you need to do to get better. Good luck.

Softball Chik - I'm really glad you can overcome what you have been experiencing. My daughter pretty much had the same experience you did but decided to give up softball because of the poor decisions made by the coach. After 9 years of softball and 4 of them as travel, she is now done with travel softball. I'm sure she will continue to try out for school ball as she played this season, too. Don't get beat by bad coaching!! Keep pushing to show your talents.

Uber -- OGSO is also in Lorain and Medina Counties. It's akin to Little League Softball. It is played under OHSAA fastpitch rules. It starts with T-ball, coach pitch, then 8 to 10 years, 11-12 year-old girls, 13-14, 15-and up. There are a lot of communities that have a travel team that plays in its OGSO league, then a strictly rec-level team from the community that plays in the league as well. It's not a bad place to get started.

Good luck Softball Chick. Don't give up. Go to as many tryouts as you can. There is a team that is a good fit for you. My dd got started in OGSO when she was 10, and just completed her first year at 12U. She played both this year, will go strictly travel ball for next year.

Softball Chick...dont let a bad coach ruin your softball career. The same sort of thing happened to my DD. She too about quit playing a game she has a tremendous passion for due to a coach that likes to play needless head games. Keep going to tryouts, you will find a good fit for you!

I actually thought it be illegal to hold tryouts for these teams.

All girls must be from the same community on an OGSO team. Waivers must be obtained for anyone not from that community. So you can hold tryouts if you want. Maybe this community forms an A and a B team? Definitely not the norm, but not illegal.
