Too Many Teams?

I reccently saw on another thread, a post for a 16U player looking for a team in 2006. Within 2 days she had a response from no less than 6 teams, and this is 3 months after August tryouts! My question is-are there too many travel teams in Ohio for the pool of players available? :-/

Sometimes teams hold out in case that one spectacular player shows up. I have seen in the past where decent players were passed up hoping for a great player. Then they settled for weaker players when the great one didn't show up and the pool of decent players were taken.

My team takes on no more than 12 players, UNLESS we find a super duper awesome diamond in the rough that was passed over. My coachs' thought is as most coaches think and that is that over 12 players on a team is usually a recipe for disaster with playing time. Travel players pay big fees to PLAY not sit the bench.

There are always too many teams at all the age groups.
Every year there is that daddy who gets all upset that his little DD is not getting her fair share of playing time, so he starts his own team.

There are alot of teams out there to chose from. What starts out to look like a good situation for your DD and family may not be. Sometimes picking a team is like buying a car, you need to test drive it to see if you like it, and you should never buy the first thing you see. Coaches are like car dealers also, they want you to believe that the choice you have made will be one you wont regret. It sometimes takes time to find that right team for your DD that is a good fit for her and the entire family. Check out teams first before deciding. Talk to other parents to see how they like it and most of all, make sure your schedule is flexable and affordable enough to meet the needs of the team. Alot of teams these days do alot of overnight traveling and it may be to much for some families. The car should match the driver. Don't buy a Hummer if you really want to drive a Cady. Good luck to all.

Teams looking for players at this late date may result from players holding out for their ideal situation. ? ?The large number of teams at each age group makes finding the right situation more likely for each player. ? By the time the travel, summer season is in full swing teams and players will have found each other.

Some interesting perspectives. I assume there's no right or wrong answear, I've just noticed that there seems to be 5 times as many travel teams as there was 5 years ago.

I agree that there are a lot of teams out the now. ?There can't ever be too many. ?I will offer this up for discussion though. ?I think just as there were only "rec teams" and "travel teams" 10 years ago we now have "rec teams", "travel teams" and "Tournament Teams". ?It seems that a lot of parents saw fastpitch travel teams ?doing their things and their DD were not part of it. ?They grouped together and started a travel team. ?I think there is still a distinction between those that "travel" in their general geographic area, and those that travel to search out the best competition and venues to play (tournament teams). ?I still think that many of the top line players will search out the tournament teams, but there will still be talent on the travel teams. ?Enough so that they will be competitive "on any given weekend", but not consistantly. ? ?

I agree with Ohio Rays. I also don't think there will ever be too many teams. I know that puts me at odds with many herre, but it's my opinion that a free market (not manipulated by government regulations) is never wrong. Softball has about as free of a market as it gets.

I do think it behooves each team to state its intentions at its tryouts. I had all of our Heat teams do that this year so that girls would know exactly what type of situation they were getting into if they joined one of our teams. We have everything from teams that stay mostly local to teams shooting for ASA Nationals and playing the top competition they can find. All of it is fine as long as it's stated up front.
