Phil, that was not a choice. A great choice but never the less it was not one to choose from...

Ask all the 10U hitters that wind up 3.5 feet from the plate by the time the fireballers pitches arive at the plate!

10U JUNK Pitcher :lmao:

WOW they should have fastball and maybe changeup at that age. Is that what your calling a junk pitcher.

Depends on you are going against. If you have a fireball pitcher going against a team that can crush the ball, better have that junk pitcher because it seems they get crippled until they figure out the speed. However, you have a weak hitting team better not use that junk pitcher because they'll crush her, so a flame thrower will dominate.

10u is the the age group where a girl that throws 50plus is almost unhittable. That kind of speed from only 35 feet is very hard to get around on.
50 mph from 35 feet is equivalant to 57mph from 40 feet as far as reaction time is concerned.

I agree with Phil, strikes of any kind would be a blessing.

That's what I was thinking, a junk pitcher at 10U???? COME ON!!!!! I've heard MANY parents say it exists, but I've never actually seen one in person. At that age they should still be mastering their mechanics, not trying to throw junk. Their hands are too little, they don't have the speed for the pitches to break, and they are still struggling to throw a strike!! Thanks for the laugh, I was feeling a little grouchy for a minute there!! :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

Your normal 10U pitcher usually has 2 pitches.........strikes and balls.

Now if your pitcher is real consistent, then hopefully she has some speed. But, speed variation will throw off any batter at any age.

I had a 10u pitcher last year whose top speed was 46 but usually threw her fastball around 42. Had a sweet back hand change that floated about 25mph and a knuckleball (yes it had spin but it was a good middle off speed pitch) that was in the low 30's. She threw one perfect game and gave some of the best teams in the state some really tough games.

I just had this discussion last week. Just let it rip. The harder the better. Develop speed early. Jenny Ritter spoke to our team last year and she said that in her first game as a 10u player she hit or walked 12 out of 14 batters...but she threw hard!!

I agree. Just throw hard and try to get it over the plate. The more you throw (and practice, practice, practice) the more it will become second nature.

Went to a pitching clinic with Cat. She said speed comes with age. Teach them how to throw with good mechanices and strikes. At that age my dd may not have been fast , but she could hit her spots and change speeds. I Had one of those fireballs on the team. Everybody was" boy she throws fast." But, you never knew where the ball was going.Hit the batters, the top of the backstop,or the icecream truck in the parking lot behind the backstop.:D

Strike thrower..........

Then speed......

then a change.........

I was at NSA Worlds last year and it is all about speed. I saw very few change ups or anything other than high 40's- 50+ pitchers.

My 10u pitcher (#1) flirts with 50 mph occasionally and she seems nearly unhittable. Most girls have already decided that they are going to strike out before reaching the plate. Throw in a change-up with that speed and you have all the tools you need to dominate at that level. I have yet to see a junk ball pitcher at that age except for maybe lasers purple's #1 from last summer. She was unreal.

Just asked cause im hearing more and more about 10u pitcher having 4 or 5 pitches and a pitching coach that is teaching them. i was shocked to know that 10u s have that much control!

They don't, I assure you. Having a pitch means you are able to throw it for a strike during a game. Practicing 5 pitches doesn't mean any of them can be thrown with the desired result and you are wasting valuable time that can be used to practice proper fastball mechanics. I would be leary of any pitching coach who is trying to teach a 10 year old a pitch other than a fastball and a change-up. There are exceptions but not many!!
