I'm sure the freshmen players mentioned are very good and make a great contribution to the teams, ?however the ideal situation for the coaches at these schools would be to have so much talent that freshmen still had to play on the freshman team. ? ?I'm sure all hs coaches wish they had that type of talent.

Sometimes freshmen are county leaders in ALMOST EVERY OFFENSIVE CATEGORY;so why would ANY COACH want a senior starting who is leaving, when you can have 4 years of A player performing at a high high level??????

Because they ARE seniors and have obviously proven their talent or they wouldn't still be on the team. The freshman do have 4 years to play - so why ditch the upper classmen?
You wouldn't feel that way if you were the senior or the seniors parents or if your DD got ditched as a senior because she was "leaving" - she is graduating not quitting.

The best coaches could care less what grade a player is in. Talent should rule the day.

What grade a player is in should not matter until senior nite when they are recognized.

What people have to remember is this. In years past many schools only had players that only played fastpitch during the season. Maybe some rec ball in the summer and a few players played travel ball. Now many HS teams have 12 players who play travelball. At the same time it is not unusual to have incoming freshman that have played travelball since they were 9 years old (5 years). Combine that with fallball, maybe some indoor winterball, practicing all winter long. I know some freshman that are currently on our HS team that have played 400 plus games of fastpitch softball so far. My point is these are not your typical rookie freshman, they are PLAYERS.

When you consider that a great HS career for the typical play may mean that if thy start every possible game thier entire four year they may play 110 or so games if they make it to at least the districts every year. I have 11 year old players who already have more games then that under thier belt.

Talent must be the only measuring stick if you intend to have a winning program. If you are true to it, then the player will respect it.

Sorry I cant resist so I am gonna type it. The seniors have played travel ball, fall ball and winter ball since 7th grade, gave everything asked of them, so all that goes out the window. We'll wait and see at the end of the year stats who actually had better on base percentages, less K's , stolen bases etc. You gotta make it to first to score... Seniors are getting hosed, yes I am a senior dad, and don't care what others say.

But they are doing as their told, do they have to like it no, but they do what is needed when asked

If you don't care what others have to say then why ask the question?

Re: Whats with Freshmen starting for both Hilliard

A good coach puts the BEST 9 players on the field regardless of grade. Any coach who puts upper classmen on the field just because they are upper classmen is not putting the program or the team first. He is playing on feelings and that cannot happen in a winning program. Sad, yet true. :-/
Also as the school wraps up this season, it might be smart to get those freshmen some "game" time to prepare for next season. It is NEVER to early to start building for next year. JMHO.

Re: Whats with Freshmen starting for both Hilliard

Attitude, hustle, and other things help a coach make a decision if it's close to call between a senior and freshman. But since I don't know the Hilliard program, I suppose the base issue is which one is the better player? If that isn't the case at Hilliard then I don't know what to tell you except there's always someone with an issue at every HS program, so you are definatly not alone.

Exactly Buckeye, so there's only three weeks left in her career, so we told her be the best you can be doing what your'e asked and remember the good times and not the bad. Take what you learned and use it in life experiences that await you in both how to handle the good and bad and how to treat others as well.

Re: Whats with Freshmen starting for both Hilliard

ok.. as a player i am going to voice my opinion. The best nine should be on the field, yes i agree. But also, it comes to a point and time where those best nine are going to hit a batting slump, or they're going to have an off day. When this happens they should be taken out. What I have noticed is that these so called BEST NINE are left in no matter what becasue they're apparantly the BEST NINE and according to their dads who talk to the coaches they still deserve to be out there. But what about that senior sitting on the bench who has played since they were five years old playing tee-ball in the local league. They did not suffer through 10+ years of bad calls, coaches yelling, and frustrated parents just to sit on the bench during the time that they have respectfully earned the right to be on the field. No I am not a senior yet, but one of these days I will be and if ?I am just going to sit on the bench, what's the point of playing?

I am all for the best player playing. However, you cannot pull out of the equation the value of experience. I compare my youngest daughter to seniors and upper classmen, and I am constantly telling her that her only guarantee for playing time is to be much better than them. If she is equal or just a little better, then the experience becomes an important factor in who the coach is going to play. Please notice that I am talking about seniors and upper classmen who play at least at the same level as a freshman.

Re: Whats with Freshmen starting for both Hilliard

Sorry Pouncer wrong there, she has already a few times and has not received a good answer, too far along in the season to do anything about it. So much for showing loyalty to a program over the years when she easily could have gone outside it. Hearing other parents bash over the years, we said no it can't be true, there must be something else, living it this past season, we have seen what everyone else had the last few years as well. When she's in, she's making contact, getting on, making diving catches in the games doing what she has to do and still sits, so go figure. I won't be quiet with the next one though as I've learned things aren't always what they seem.

But then again, they don't get seen by colleges in HS anyway. Also pouncer, I am not the only one. There are over half the parents who feel the same way and many have stated their cases on here.

Again it's also not any kid's fault for playing in a spot either, it's the coaches who make the lineup at the end of the day and even she realizes that as well and will do what is asked of her these last few weeks. Does it Stink you bet, but everything happens for a reason and that's why there are chat boards to discuss issues.

Again, I did not start this version, just added to it.

Too much politics and the buddy system going on here and I don't play that game sorry.

Re: Whats with Freshmen starting for both Hilliard

Once again I am confused, pretty much common place now-a-days. ?The best 9 on the field regardless of year, no question there. I keep reading about loyalty to the player, this is where I am confused. A couple of questions I have; Are these seniors still on the team? Do they still represent their school? Is their program losing games that they would have won with them on the field?

Everyone on a TEAM has a spot to fill and a job to do. If you and your DD are not happy with their spot, find out what is required to get to where you want to be and do it or accept it and make the best of it. Parents should be guiding their DD in dealing with situations, not escalating them to a point of harm to the program.

Some coaches play politics, but the majority have the best intentions. All parents should be their kids best advocate, but more and more parents are doing it at the determent of others. Coaches are very often put into bad situations by the AD or other administrators who are much more politically oriented and the coaches have to deal with the fallout from the parents.

My DD has been playing travelball for 3 years and is playing 14u as a young 12 year old: her middle school coach (7th grade) refuses to start her because it makes the rest of the girls feel inadequte. I have to laugh at the whole thing, because it makes absolutely no sense. My DD just enjoys getting out in the dirt and being with her friends, when travel starts (Memorial Day Weekend) it is all behind her. What else can be done that won't sour the situations for many others?

3dm you have got to be kidding. a coach that won't start a player because she makes the other players feel inadequate, that is crazy. i feel for her.

now on my dd school team there is at least one player who can't even run to first base and her parents complain about her playing time and really believe she is the best player ever. very funny.
