Re: Whats with Freshmen starting for both Hilliard

I feel for all the parents who have a dd that gets bumped from the line-up based on the coaches decision. The coach will play who they feel give the team the best chance to win. We all have a right to agree or disagree, but the coach has the final say. It is great when it is in your favor, and stinks when it goes the other way.

If the coach is successful according to the terms of the school district, they will stay. If not, they go. Until then, the only option is to work hard and help the team (maybe the chance to play will come again), or quit the team. You can't sugarcoat it, and it is one of the hard facts of life an athlete will learn as it relates to the "real world".

Summer ball isn't all it is cracked up to be either. My daughter has been treated more fair in HS ball than she has been in her travel ball past experiences. Please note that my daughter is not a regular starter on varsity, and she has seen plenty of JV time. We have found that these adverse situations make her better as she tries harder to prove the coach wrong.

It isn't high school or travel ball that is the difference--it is mostly the coaching style. I am positive that soon there will be a thread of complaints about daddy coach playing his daughter when she isn't as good as other players.

Luvthegame....That thread has been hashed & rehashed every season. LoL

Was really hoping not to have to read it this year. Oh well, Genie is out of the bottle now.

Hilliarddad--I commend you in the way you are handling the situation with your DD. There really is not much more you can do in this situation. You're teaching her to handle adversity in a very positive way, which it seems most parents do not do these days.

I'm a young, first year coach of a travel team, so I played high school, varsity ball not too long ago. I played varsity all four years. First two years I was the starting pitcher and third basemen when not pitching. Junior year comes and a girl transfers from the local catholic school because the softball program there wasn't the best (for the lack of better wording) and her daddy gets the head coaching job. She's a pitcher--need I say more? She pitched all conference games, except for two that I threw (she couldn't beat the team), and she threw in tourney and we lost. Daddy show-boated his daughter every chance he had; I worked my tail off with my pitching coach to no avail. I did everything he asked of me, played third all year long, pitched non-conference games, etc. Nothing changed. I got hosed basically. He left after that year (she got a scholarship to a local d-1 school). I blew out my elbow my senior year and only pitched in the tournaments. Things happen for a reason. I ended up still playing collegiately, but at the D-3 level, and received an excellent education.

High school ball is just that--high school ball. Do your best, play hard, have a great attitude about it and don't let anyone tell you differently. Yes, the best 9 should be on the field playing. Does that always happen? No. Teach your kids how to deal with these types of things when they come. Have your DD talk to the coach and stand up for themselves rather than having the parents complain and poison the entire team. Adversity can teach us a lot.

loveforsoftball2 you are right on. ? my dd had a similar experience with travel ball last season. ? the coaches daughter was the third basemen and could not field or throw but never missed an inning. ?she did not hit at all but was the number three batter every game. ? ?virtually all practice time and game time was spent with the coach screaming at his dd about her thows. ?i instructed my dd to just keep working and ?doing her best. ? it is not just hs where you get bad situations. ? sometimes travel ball is worse, ?it just depends on wether or not you are in the click.

loveforsoftball2: Great post and could not agree with you more!! Especially your last paragraph. More parents need to stay out of the situation and teach their kids to deal with things on their own. Sports teaches a valuable life lesson.

We don't regret how my daughter has been treated. It has made her work harder and improve immensely--and the life lessons are important. Having her dad as a coach will force her to work harder for playing time as he tends to lean toward giving the other players more time than his daughters. Our girls on the summer team are all playing well. With that kind of talent, she will not mind sharing bench time with her teammates.

tomuch: that wasn't the point of the post and i'm not going to go down that road. It's a shame that out of all of what I wrote that is what you pulled out.

Thanks to the others; I'm glad I could help or at least offer some insight with my experience.
