Based on the one time I did this, I think a freshman throwing over 50 overhanded is pretty good ... with around 55 being extremely strong.

I HAVE A 14 AND 12 YEAR OLD THROWING OVER HAND AT 60 PLUS EASILY.

Quick release and accuracy in my opinion is as important or more important then the actual speed of the overhand throw.

In fastpitch everything on the infield happens in 3 second bursts. The throws are not that long for good athletes. The quick release will account for more outs then a rocket arm in my experience.

having said that, it sure is nice when you have a player that has both a quick release and a rocket arm. :)

Coach Wendy ... have you actually radar gunned the 12 year old throwing over 60 easily? If my baseline is correct based on the radar gun times I clocked, I think a 12 year old throwing that hard would be pretty amazing. I clocked an entire high school program and didn't have anyone approaching 60.

SHE (THE ALMOST12 YEAR OLD) HAS BEEN CLOCKED MANY TIMES, EVEN BY PRO BASEBALL PLAYERS. THE ALMOST 12 YEAR OLD IMPRESSED MO SANFORD AND STEPHEN LARKIN. YES SHE IS AMAZING, BOTH GIRLS HAVE SPEED AND ACCURACY.

NOW IF I COULD KEEP THE 14 YEAR OLD INTERESTED IN SOFTBALL.

I agree with Rich, I would rather have a "Kobata" type fielder than a rocket arm with a slow release. Now put those two together and you have a ball player.

ok thanks guys for your opinions.......i tried out for a rec league team and threw around 50 over hand as an eighth grader...they were pretty impressed by that...they would probably be pretty amazed by a 12 year old throwing 60!!! tht is really impressive!
thanks guys

Give me a shortstop with technique any day over a rocket arm. A good example is Greenville's SS Lisa Brinley. Although she can let it rip from deep in the hole she no way could throw 60 mph overhand. However, as the ball approaches her she positions her feet in the throwing position, scoops the ball, removes the ball from her glove as she brings the ball up, and delivers crisply from the ear. All of this is done in a smooth, graceful motion. And guess what, she gets people out. So take what God gave you and improve upon it by perfecting your technique.
