Whats your opinion on wearing face mask?

With the speed the ball comes of the the bats these day, coupled with IDIOT coaches who play their 3rd baseman 8 feet off of home plate esp when a slappers up. FYI my DD happens to be a slapper. It should be mandatory. This is my Dd's first year as a slapper 12u. She's left 3 3rd basemen in a crumpled heap laying on the field. at a minimum 3rd and pitcher. To the coaches that play their 3rd basemen 6-8 feet off of home....... Your total and complete morons. Even an intermediate lefty or slapper can damn near kill that kid. I think they should both wear chest protectors also. Better safe than sorry, it's just that simple

Here is a video of my DD pitching this past Sunday taking a line drive to the face. Not only does she wear the mask, she uses a heart guard under her uniform. Safety is #1!

Thanks. She works hard! She was throwing a circle change up this time but it went high. I use a cheap Insignia 1080p flip camera that I got from Best Buy. Unfortunately, they don't sell this version anymore but it is cheap enough that if it breaks, I can just replace it. Have been using this video camera for about 3 years now and it still works even after all the foul balls! I have 4 batteries. Each game in pool play will be about 5gb and will use 1 battery. For the videos I chop up of just her pitches, I use After Effects just because it is easier to chop and edit and will use multiple processors when rendering and for this one we used a cheap program called Pinnacle Studio HD. The hardest part of it is trying to mount it to the backstop as they all are usually dented!

Not to change the subject to much but who uses a heart guard and what kind. I have 15year old that took her first shot that she could not get a glove on and she agreed to try one.

My daughter plays for valley storm college exposure she pitches against the best of the best she just completed her freshmen year where she was varsitys number 1 pitcher on her team in gwoc she has faced real good hitters she has never wore a face mask and has never had a close call nock on wood with her success i dont make her wear 1 at 16 u she doesnt like them but she has never giving it a chance tho as a dad its my biggest fear I read the horror storys and it gives me nightmares I would recomend get them use to the mask at an early age and make them wear it I could enjoy the games a lot more if my daughter wore 1

My daughter has wore a mask for five years and has never had an issue with wearing it and has not tested it. I think she took this shot yesterday because of a mental error. Am I being over protective?

Have to throw an experience dd had this weekend while pitching. This happened in a 10u game, dd threw fast ball that was sharply hit right back at her head. From where I was sitting she was only able to move her glove up maybe 6 inches and turn her head just slightly before the ball smacked her left eye/temple area then grazed her ear. She dropped instantly and was more scared than hurt. The only reason we’re not in the ER now is because of that mask and it doing its job.

My daughter's 10u team has some pretty strong hitters on it. For the first time this entire year we played another 10u team this weekend who's corners & pitchers were NOT wearing masks. One of our hitters stroked a ball that flew right past the pitchers head before the girl even thought to react. A few batters later another line drive flew past her & into the outfield this time grazing her arm on the way.....it happened so fast no one even noticed it hit her arm until she was holding her arm and crying.
My point is, I saw first hand how a very good 10u athlete does not have adequate reaction time to protect herself. Our team requires the corners & pitchers to wear masks....I really hope others see how important it is to wear protective gear to keep our DDs safe.

My dd and I just came back from a prominent D1 softball team and their camp, and this very question was asked. The coach's response-the NCAA should make the pitchers wear them as a mandatory device. They are the only player who should be out of defensive position at the crack of a bat. THe person who asked then asked, what about the corners. His response was mostly noted on this thread except for one....he also stated not only the bat manufacturers but tournament directors. The reason tournament directors and probably one of the biggest complaints of a tournament----field maintenance. He said a properly drug field after every game prevents the bad hops that allot of players take. But because tournament directors don;t want to pay for the additional staff to drag fields, they're taking chances on a young girls face getting tore up. He also said then if insurance companies go after the tournament directors, maybe then things will change.

Well, that parent (apparently big on face masks) asked, what about the corners. He said they shouldn't need them either because you wouldn't put your 3rd basemen up 1/3 of the way up the line for the 3-6 hitters (something along that part of the line-up). He said if the #4 comes up to bunt, let her have it. Most likely, she's too slow to make it to first with the 3rd basemen charging and firing a quick strike. The coach did counter to the parent, how many times will you see the #4 batter bunting? The percentages say not a lot.

He did stress the younger ages should wear them until they learn their smaller motor skills.

I have been a proponant of pitchers wearing a mask since I found this forum.

My 14 y/o DD just took a line drive directly to the face while wearing a mask. She is one of the most athletic / defensive players I have seen. There was no way in h e l l that she could have defended this hit ....... she was perfectly fine and was very upset the umpires made such a big deal of it and stopping play. "Dad I AM FINE .. THE BALL HIT MY MASK"!

I WILL BE THE FIRST TO SIGN A PETITION TO MANDATE THE USE OF MASKS FOR PITCHERS.

While I still strongly feel the home plate umpire's strike zone lead to this .... I have to say KUDOS to the USSSA umps and the Athletic Trainer at ESPN Wide World of Sports for stopping play and forcing her to be evaluated. I also have to give my kid a huge amount of credit for stepping back in the circle and finishing the game strong.

A pitcher's (and pitcher's parent's) worst nightmare and THE MASK posibly saved her life and/or ending her athletic career.

George, very glad she is ok. Thankfully, the Ohsaa will almost assuredly be mandating pitchers to wear face masks in the very near future. So at least during high school season there won't be an option for a pitcher to be smashed in the face with a rocket line drive without at least some protection.

George, I am so glad she's ok. I never want another kid to go through what my 13yr old went through this year. After 5 facial fractures (both eye sockets, cheek bone and nose) and thousands of dollars that I am still playing in hospital and surgery bills, I never want to see a parent go through it either. Something tells me that any parent that says face masks shouldn't be worn has not lived through a close call or worse. I'll help you sign that petition!

As a witness to the incident George describes above, and a parent of a pitching teammate of George's DD, I am completely with George on this one. My daughter will not be shedding her mask anytime soon. Her reactions are probably even a tad slower than George's dd.......

After #7 said she was alright and the crusty oldtimer with the worst stike zone of the season ..... I make the comment that "this is what happens when you force a pitcher to throw over the plate" ... his partner the "lazy base ump" tells me "one more word out of you, I will have you escorted out of the park" .... While I visioned how proud my father would have been having my first ball park to be thrown out of being Disney, "The place were all dreams come true" .... I calmed down and simply said "Thank You". It's a small world out there ... our paths may cross again.
