ESPN Sportscenter just did a large piece in MLB pitchers getting drilled .. quite a few the past couple years ... they are looking into kevlar hat liners but that doesnt protect the face . I'd guess you could youtube the piece if interested . MD

Thanks everyone for all the prayers and well wishes. Surgery tomorrow morning. Wish us luck. I have complete faith in the wonderful team of physicians at Akron Childrens that she will be fixed and ready to play in no time.

How's she doing? We wish her a speedy and complete recovery.

Thanks! The surgery went really well and she got her splint off today. The doctors also decided today that she does not need the surgery to fix the eye socket. She's healing nicely although it's killing her that she can't pick up a ball for 5 more weeks. LOL

DD got the news today that she is the 3rd basemen for Varsity and the first thing the HC says...you may want to start wearing a mask and not a mouth guard. DD asks me if she should, and I told her if you pay your own doctor's bills, then you may have the choice. Now ask me this same question a couple years from now.

He is 60ft away and could not respond fast enough to the batted ball. I don't want this to be my daughter.

This is what happened to a pitcher with a mask on. Look at all those nice white teeth she still has!

Saw for the first time a pitcher get hit in the face by a line drive. She didn't have a mask on but was wearing sunglasses. Sunglasses cut her head above the eyebrow. She got stitches and she has a concussion. They took her to the hospital in the e-squad and unfortunately it was an away game and neither of her parents were there. Very scare situation. I say wear a mask.

Every single one of my players wear them. There is a small adjustment period but nothing major. I'm totally for them.

Geri Ann Glascow stopped wearing hers for Georgia about midway through the season. Sad to see, but I'm sure she had her reasons.

The girl, just above pitches for dd's varsity team. She played in the second game that day after getting 7 stitches. Her mom told me the emergency room doctor told her, that if it wasn't for the Ripit mask, she would have lost 3-4 teeth and probably suffered a broken jaw. $49 for a mask is well worth the price.

My daughter has worn a Rip-It since she was 8 (13 now). We had our entire team wear it with out question at the time. They were little and really couldn't argue. The parents liked the idea of the safety. Now that she is older, she will not wear one in the OF, that bothers me a little, but seeing her not wear one in practice is what really bugs me. I have seen a few girls get hit in the face, two of the three were just playing catch in practice. Not paying attention. To busy chit chatting. When she is on the mound or any IF position (mostly 3B and 1B) she wears it with out question.

I once saw a pitcher (10U) get struck in the face with a line drive. She was wearing one of the plastic masks, unknown brand. She was hit so hard the ball struck the top part of the mask and did not touch her skin but still left a a golf ball sized hematoma under her skin. She went right to the ER. She was ok, no concussion and was pitching again by Sunday. Very lucky.

Within the last three weekends, I have seen many 10U girls not wearing masks, including pitchers. I will not allow my DD's on the field, game or practice, without their mask. There should be no question on whether or not infield should wear a mask. Of course getting hit with the ball is the #1 reason, but I have also seen some very violent collisions with base runners as well.

Corners and pitcher, i can see. SS and second mabey while they are younger and learning the position. Outfield being required to wear i think is a little much. What is going on with the coaching and teaching? They have a glove for protection dont they?

Kentucky's freshman pitcher, Kelsey Nunley, wears a mask and took them to Super Regionals.

Would Kentucky have got to the Super Regionals if she didn't wear it?

She's been wearing one since she was 8, so it would take some time to get comfortable pitching without it. The point is, I'm sure just about any college would now take Nunley with the mask and hopefully that will change the mindset of coaches evaluating pitchers.

For the record, I'm not advocating masks - it should be a personal choice of the player/parents without any ramifications from others.
