Whats your opinion on wearing face mask?

I took my dd to University of Findlay's (DII) softball clinic Saturday. In the q and a session after the afternoon pitching clinic I asked if any of the college players wore a mask in games. Three of them raised their hands.

Masks may start filtering into college over the next few years. These 3 kids that raised their hands could be freshman but I really don't know. I can say that the 4 games AU played against Findlay last season, Findlay had no kids on the field with masks on. Out of the 59 college games we played, I think I saw maybe 1 or 2 masks total in all the games, and they were worn by 3rd baseman.

Maybe Shark99's DD will keep wearing her mask, and maybe end up on TV playing the CWS wearing a mask, and we can all say...I remember when C.E. was a Freshman High School player and she said she'd always wear a mask...

I watched some of the highlights from opening weekend on Georgia's website and seen that the freshman Geri Ann Glasco wore a mask when she pitched.

in time it will be more prevalent at most ages. My guess is it will become more "agreeable" but not mandatory beyond HS level. It is surprising that the over-regulated OHSAA hasn't slapped this down across the state like they have everything else "they" find important or in need of being controlled. Uh-oh... did I stimulate OHSAA discussions...

I hear there is an article in a recent NFCA newsletter by the Georgetown Assistant coach discussing this very topic. Anyone have a membership or access to this article? Not sure which week it's in.

After spending a good part of my day in the ER today after an accident at Spano, I strongly urge the use of a face mask. My 13yr old has four facial fractures including both eye sockets and her nose. And this all happened during warm-ups when she thought she didn't need to use it. She now has to see a specialist in the morning to decide when to have surgery to repair her nose. You bet my girls will be wearing face masks. I am NOT going through this again!

Outside the line had a report on MLB looking at hard shell helmet for pitchers or hats lined with Kevlar., they even talked about facemasks although I doubt that would ever happen in MLB.

they all said one thing, they never saw the ball coming.

first off I hope your DD will be ok ..This would be the unimaginable thing for any parent to go through. We as parents want to protect our kids from possible harm in all that they do. This topic has popped up every now and then and Im not against masks in the circle but I can see things changing too. Our pitcher took one off the head right above the mask and it happened so fast that the ball was in the outfield by the fence before she could react. She will be fine thank God!! but these girls are getting bigger and stronger and quicker and the bats are getting hotter. They have not really changed the dimensions of the field to make it safer, other than the 43ft rubber ,but even that had something to do with opening up the scoring of the game.I would ask your DD's if she fears or thinks about getting hit in the face and if she says yes I would tell her to wear a mask be

What mili28 didn't mention was that her dd was back at Spano after getting out of the ER uniform and cleats on WANTING TO PLAY. She wasn't allowed, but I have to give her credit for being a warrior.

You do not wear a mask because you have a fear or thinking about getting hit in the face. You wear a mask because it for safety. YOUR SAFETY!! Just like a batting helmet. I wonder how many players would not wear a batting helmet if they said you no longer have to wear a batting helmet only if you have a fear.

Buster's Daughter, CJ Combs, is the head coach at Talladega. She took a shot to the face while coaching at third this past weekend. Early reports she is doing ok but it came with some serious damage. Buster is a pitching instructor of many in SE Indy, SW Ohio, and N KY and CJ used to help him when home from school for she pitched as well. She's a great person and friend of ours and the Static. Keep her in your prayers as well.

Here's a link where you can see a picture of her when she accepted the job. The Daily Home - TC names Combs new softball coach

My wife and DD were watching the Lasers Orange v. New Era Diamond Girls game when the Lasers pitcher got hit. I am very relieved to hear that she is doing well and is no worse for the wear. Milli, thoughts and prayers for your DD and your family. Sounds like from what Mad Hornet posted, she's a tough customer and will be back on the field at the earliest possible date.

This game can be dangerous but I've yet to see a girl at this level who is 'afraid'...Shark is 100% right...its about SAFETY and not fear. If girls are afraid they wouldn't play no matter how much us dads would try to force them. But this game is not baseball. Girls at much younger ages are throwing harder from a shorter distance (reaction time) where boys aren't throwing quite as hard from a further distance. My DD catches and I did some research four years ago about reaction time for catchers...if I recall correctly, a 55mph pitch from 40 feet was the same as an 85mph fastball from 60 feet...Girls are doing this at 12...boys won't see 85 until high school. The bats mean the ball is coming back out at the reaction time of 110mph (reaction time speed equiv) at 40 feet (which the pitcher is now probably now standing at 35 after delivering the ball)....
There is no way humanly possible to react to that.
just my .02
safety first...anybody that questions the toughness of these young warriors is a dolt.

My daughter has worn one since age 9. In a practice a girl was hit in the face ( she was wearing a mask thank god). Immediatly after practice went out an purchased one. I also have her wear a chest protector as well.
