Whats your opinion on wearing face mask?

The players start off as little 10 year olds and grow into young women when we aren't looking. One day you have your little 13 year old girl throwing watermelons to a very mature 14 year old women... bad things are going to happen in a blink of an eye.

We owe it to the young players and their parents to alert them to this danger and its very simple remedy before they have to go through a horrific first hand experience

From what I'm hearing, just recently a D-1 Senior prospect out of Central Ohio was up at Akron and the coach made a comment that only P****'S wear a face mask. This girl is a pitcher and decided not to wear her face mask and ended up taking one right in the mouth from a batter pushing back a couple teeth. Face masks do not make a player play any better or worse (although it may give confidence in players that have eaten one) and as we keep seeing in this thread...its all about safety.

Any coach who says that should be required to pitch batting practice themselves without a net!

This isn't the first time I have heard of college coaches making comments to players similar to this. I have heard it first hand being said to younger girls during a clinic. Very disappointing to me. It sends the wrong message period. No matter how you slice this, softball is a GAME, and safety should be a priority at ALL levels.

How many pitchers have been hit in the face this winter at the Spano Dome? I have heard a Laser Gold pitcher, and a Laser Orange pitcher. Are we talking about the same person or is it two different pitchers.

Hopefully we raise our kids to follow their beliefs instead of listening to others. I would hope if my kids come up on this type of scenario she/he will do what is right in their mind.
prayers to the pitcher.

This is one of the best replies in a long while and goes way beyond any game! Loved reading your reply!!!

It's all well and good for a kid to take a stand based what she thinks is right, but it's still wrong that she would be unfairly judged by a college scout or potential college coach because she chose to wear a face mask. Mandate it for all players until the age of 18, and that removes the prejudice and protects our players at the same time.

DD Pitching at 10U, Hard shot up the middle - She fell off slightly and couldn?t get her glove to the ball.
Took her off her feet and left a nice 11 1/2" Dudly Tattoo on her thigh. Would not want to think about what would have happened had this shot been to an unmasked head.

Needles to say she always wears mask and Heartguard (though still no shin pads) - She did get up and finished the game (Although somewhat shaky).
I'm sure there are down sides to masks but I'm not sure what they are. I'm old enough to remember the out cry when helmets were made mandatory in Hockey and Batting Helmets in Baseball. So I'm sure this will be a process but in the next 15 years no one will understand why masks weren?t always worn.

I sent an email to the OHSAA to state my concern and ask for justification on not requiring face masks for pitchers and corners. Maybe if they get enough emails they will be forced to act, or maybe they will wait for a highly public injury. Let's try to force action before any more serious injuries occur.

Was watching the end of DD's 8th grade tryouts today - batter hit straight back to pitcher and & almost didn't get the glove up in time. Coach asked her if she had a face mask. Her dad was standing next to me & yelled out - "she'll have it tomorrow". Was glad to hear the coach ask. Same coach last year - during end of season tournament - had a pitcher's forehead split open by a batted ball - no facemask. My DD (who is also a pitcher) was fielding at the time - wearing her facemask :cap:

I've read an awful lot of comments regarding this in the previous pages. Ask yourself some very LOGICAL questions before you flex your muscles and call mask players wimps. All batters are REQUIRED to wear helmets with face guards are they not? The maximum velocity of a Pitched ball is between 50 and 60 miles per hour, yes it can cause some damage. Take into consideration that same velocity possibly being doubled off a composite bat. Yep, you're looking at a ball travelling up to 100 MPH, with split second timing to catch or duck.
With the technological advances in the balls and bats, the players reaction times are reduced. Keep this in mind with all your precious children under the age of 18 who choose to have some type of protection for their faces. You all have no problem whatsoever having those teeth encased in braces to give that perfect smile. I wonder if you'll treat the dental implants to replace them with such favor.
