What is an Error??

During our game I saw 1-ball go through our 3rd baseman's legs 1- come off the glove of our 3rd baseman 1-ball drop between ( I mean almost collision) Short and Left field, 1-pop up that the 3rd baseman was right under and then last minute she jumped out of the way (I'm still trying to figure that on out) 1- came off the glove of 2nd base. So then in the paper it had only 2 errors on our team. I would just like to know exactly what is an error.

You must have a very nice parent keeping stats/score who shouldn't be allowed near the books! Those all sound like errors to me. There isn't any point in trying to make your team look better by doctoring stats, people will know the truth when they watch you play.

Four of the five should have been errors.
An error is a ball misplayed by a fielder that would have resulted in an out if fielded cleanly.
Unfortunately, at the HS level some coaches score differently based on the situation to pad hitting or pitching stats. What is a hit for their team is an error for the other team because if that run scores, or scores a run, it doesn't hurt their ERA.
It is sad, but true.

I believe the scorekeeper is the coaches 14 yr old daughter and wife. So there may have been a few errors left out.

I count 3 errors by the descriptions you gave. The fly ball and popup don't count unless the ball touches leather (and was routine). As much as I hate them, mental errors don't count as errors in the scorebook.

Regarding the two that went off of the gloves of the 3B and 2B; if it wasn't a routine play the scorekeeper may not have felt that an error should be charged. The scorekeeping guides say to give the benefit of doubt to the batter if it is too close to call.

The main thing to keep in mind is whenever a parent keeps the book, it's probably going to favor their girls. Not always, but mostly.

Woolfman,
I'm obviously not talking about you. Lol You're the best bro!!

in all fairness, i always look at errors this way...and this is difficult because you are basically judging other girls, DD and the other team...
if it's a liner, i'm basing most of those on hits (remember, any of these depends on the situation)
overthrows and underthrows are easy, but i also like the ones where a slapper would have it out anyway...i also think past performance sometimes can blur vision...you just assume girl can make 90 plays in a row, when she gets a "tough" one, you give the batter a hit..was it really?
on all my teams, i keep another dad (this year, another statman is with me!) and sometimes i even refer to coach...i've only had one year where the errors were high (we had lots of dispute with passed balls, wild pitches, dropepd third strikes)...and if numbers are any indication, i have been brutal on my kid (and then i site the statgirl/coaches daughters are the ones we are toughest on rule)

May have led the league in errors several times, but all is a blur :)

An error is the act of a fielder misplaying a ball that lets a batter/baserunner advance one or more bases if the advancement should have been prevented with regular, ordinary effort. It is also a misplay that extends an at-bat. The determination is judged by the official scorer, so it is subjective.
