Is it true that "all" coaches have to have ace certification and if not they are not allowed in the dugout?

I am the head coach and have mine but my asst coaches do not. Can anyone help me here?

When I spoke to the TD's for York and Laplatta last week they both mentioned that all persons in the dugout must have an ACE certification, and Warren Jones has indicated the same. We had to get some assistance from the national office to expidite one of our coaches stuff.

The TD at York sent out in her info that only 1 coach had to be ACE but everyone in the dugout/field had to have an ASA background check.

"Per ASA Code: At least one (1) coach per team MUST be ACE Certified
w/background check. Certification must be presented at team check in."

Cut and pasted directly from info sent out for ASA Easterns.

In Hemet, CA they checked for one coach to be ACE certified and left it to the Managers to make sure that the rest had back ground checks (ie. they did not check for background checks).

ACE Certification is a joke. I, as well as my coaches, are teachers and have FBI background checks with fingerprints. Watching somebody tell me how to teach people how to catch flyballs and groundballs makes may angry about the waste of time as the $20 I spent. I've coached in HS for 20 years and go to at least 1 clinic a year. I also talk to many college coaches and softball instructors for coaching advice.

And does that give you an extra $3,000,000 worth of insurance. Or does it PAY your lawer fees if you get sued criminally or civilly.

ACE DOES!!!!!! SO quit winning about the $20 already.

How much do you pay per year for $50,000 car insurance, or $300,000 home insurance.

Ace is an insurance policy more then it is a training policy?

And Ace also includes a background check.......I wouldnt expect to learn any hi-tech drills from the videos, but if one coach thinks twice about how to treat a player it was well worth the $20.

If you are a teacher you know you have to have a teaching certificate to work and, continue your education as part of the job. Why should this be any different since, a good coach is a teacher as well?

I am a firm believer for one to have continued success in whatever they do, ongoing training/education is a must.

For $20 I think it is worthwhile investment especially; for the insurance you get..
ASA /ACE is a step to get coaches to be more responsible and make a reasonable investment in their coaching just like most professional careers ask.
Are the videos a little lame? Probably for someone with your experience but, allowing your players to view the videos may help them.

Over the last 8 years of my coaching Fastpitch I have seen coaches that could have used the advice in the videos especially, at the younger ages. JMHO

Back Ground check was easy. I think all coaches should be required to have one.

my beef is don't make us get it and then never check for it. What's the point? $20 is right now. I'm happy to pay the cash and the videos are what they are.

rbaggs, I couldn't agree anymore. I currently get certified, take a physical and have background checks for my teachers license, to drive a school van, be a OHSAA wrestling coach, be a USA Wrestling Freestyle coach and now to be an ASA coach. There must be a way to consolidate these, it costs me several hundred dollars a year to coach!

There are expenses involved with most professions to maintain your credentialing.

Our School District has supplemental contracts that allows you to recoup some if not all of your expenses with extra curricular school involved activities like coaching, driving the bus etc. Our physicals are paid for with the wellness benefit package so, no out of pocket there and it is not a bad thing to do regularly anyhow.

There is much more potential for injury involved in Wrestling than Fastpitch so, I would expect yearly additional training cost travel expenses for training etc. Especially; coaching USA Freestyle $$$$.

The background check is something that should be consolidated since they use the same data base.

Unlike school involved activities most Club coaches have to pay out of pocket for these required areas (unless they figure in an extra $20 or so to the sanction/insurance fees onto the player fees that some organizations already do).

This is something that is not going to go away and like everything else will most likely get more expensive as time goes on.

Like Les said, if they make it mandatory at least ask for it. We played all ASA except for one and ASA State was the only tourney we played in where they asked for it.
