Centerville, if the umpire never saw the ball hit the ground, the only thing he saw was the ball in the fielder's glove at some point, so you have to have an out! I would have asked the umpire (1) did you see the ball hit the ground; and then when he says No, (2) you did see the ball in the fielder's glove as she ran to second base, correct? When he says yes, then that simply has to be an out on the fly ball.
