Centerville, if the umpire never saw the ball hit the ground, the only thing he saw was the ball in the fielder's glove at some point, so you have to have an out! I would have asked the umpire (1) did you see the ball hit the ground; and then when he says No, (2) you did see the ball in the fielder's glove as she ran to second base, correct? When he says yes, then that simply has to be an out on the fly ball.

She was cheating a little to the right, the ball would have landed in the dirt near 2nd base, so normally, it would have been an ordinary catch. She had the ball out of her glove to start the throw to 1st as soon as she stepped on 2nd. The umpire said he never saw her catch the ball, so he ruled it a ground ball. Robbed is an understatement....oh well, the umps will be better next year, right?
