Is anyone else embarrassed?

I'm in disbelief that this game was played on that field. they wouldn't do that to a good rec ball championship.

SoCal-- I know you are really knowledgeable about Premier , isn't there some connection between National Pro Fastpitch and Premier Girls Fastpitch ?

The only connection is Bill Conroy has been involved in both, but I haven't seen anything beyond that. PGF was formed by a group of top Gold coaches out of frustration with ASA and many of them are very experienced in running high-level showcases.

Is it just coincidence that the Chicago team is the Bandits and the Beverly team is also the Bandits.

Not a coincidence - Bill Conroy started Beverly Bandits in 1998 and Chicago Bandits in 2005.

Or is there quite a bit of intermingling of people in NPF and PGF ?

Conroy is the only one I know about and there is no overlap in his involvement - he stepped down from Chicago Bandits in 2008 and PGF was announced in August 2009.

Speaking of the Beverly Bandits - what's with them naming a wife beater as an honorary coach of a girl's softball team?

Fmr. Heavy Weight Champ, Mike Tyson, named honorary coach

Joining the team for the flight from Las Vegas to Chicago, former heavy weight boxing champion and new Bandits honorary coach, Mike Tyson, took time for a few pictures in the terminal after landing. Holding the team's trophy, he was heard to say, "this is so cool". Thanks champ, the girls thought it was pretty cool too.

And he's also a convicted rapist.

You guys are just spinning your wheels about nothing. NPF was down to four teams this year for a very good reason. It's simply not marketable. Women's fastpitch is the same as women's ******. It has value as a vehicle for promoting the sport to youngsters. Standing alone, the pro game is a horrible spectator sport that lacks charm and star power. Jennie Finch carried it for several years, but not to profitability. Let's face it, the next Jennie Finch hasn't surfaced and does not appear to be on the horizon. Watching some beastly female who looks like a 1960's East German shot putter throw a softball is not that enjoyable. Even with all the exposure the collegiate game is getting on ESPN, there has been no bump for the pro game. A lot of that simply has to do with established loyalties people have for particular universities. You can't transfer that to pro teams, especially when they switch cities every year or two and swap players just as readily. The Akron Racers organization has tried and tried to develop a fan base that could make it profitable, but if it couldn't do it with stars like Bustos and other Olympians, as well as some of the college game's top pitchers as draft picks, it never will. I went to a few Racers games this year and didn't recognize most of the names on the roster. The Pride and the Bandits had all the name players. What does that tell the fans? The name players are all friends and want to play together? Those two organizations have money to pay the top players? The Racers are charging the same admission price or higher and the same price or higher for hot dogs and t-shirts as they did when Bustos was playing, but the product is not nearly as good.

Fake field? That's just where that game should have been played. It's really a fake league.

Getting back on topic . . . I cringed when I saw they were playing on that field. But if I'm not mistaken, the Pride has been using that baseball field for all its games this summer. I resigned myself to it, believing it was one of the concessions that had to be made when a pro league is trying to establish itself. But still, it looked demeaning.

USSSA Pride has been using the fields in Sulpher , LA all year?

I thought they was an Orlando team.

Really confused now.

The Pride team actually played their "home" games all over the place in an effort to promote the game around the country and even in Canada.

They did play a good number in Orlando.

Not sure how Louisiana became the host of the championships. As you all have stated - it certainly is not because of the stadium or facilities.

The attendance looked to be extremely sparse. Why not play it in Akron where it would be supported?

It has to be about money and some form of sponsorship from a tourism group or something. When in doubt, follow the money trail - it usually works.

Well, that is what I said too, Jim...LOL

Just confused. If you go to the website and in the right corner of the page.. you can see a clip on USSSA Pride winning it last year ??? and look at the field.. It is dirt.. So this is why it confused me on how it could be played on dirt one year and then what they did this year ????

I do know Tommy Voss with IFA used those fields in the past to host his event.... and I know Tommy had a big event and didn't use a baseball field.

That's another reason it confused me.

It's weird looking but so what. If the fields are flat and gives a true bounce then what's the big deal other than, "It's not how it's supposed to be." What will you all do in Berliner when all their fields are turfed. I'm sure some of you already played on turf over there. I prefer dirt over grass or turf but I certainly prefer turf after two inches of rain.

Grounders, bunts and sliding are different on turf. You should play on what you practice on and it should be consistent through the season. One or the other not a little of both. DD played USSSA on turf and we are happy to say that we will only be playing ASA this season. :yahoo:

Sanctioning has zero to do with field surface. ASA tournaments are at Berliner. Turf is definately a faster game.

The question/problem is not that the games are played on turf or grass. The issue is that it was played on a regulation baseball field where the bases and circle were not cut out. If the sliding pads and bases had been cut out and the pitchers circle was correct it would have been passable. I don't think I have ever see a softball or baseball game where sliding into a base required a player to do so on grass/turf. It is not safe. I remember seeing ankles and knees gettting messed up indoors when our team used to go to Indy in the winters.

How would I handle it at Berliner if all the fields were turfed - my team wouldn't play there.

OK, I'm confused. Never played at Berliner but I just looked at the satellite photo and I do not see any fields without dirt infields. Now the Pride in Orlando play on a baseball field with a grass infield. DD played in a USSSA tourney at Wide World Of Sports and they had us play a game on a baseball field with a grass infield. I have never been to an ASA tourney with anything other than dirt so what are we talking about with Berliner? DD plays there in October.

The four turf fields at Berliner were just added in the past year. The satellite photo must predate that.

All of Bill Beckham's tournaments this past year at Berliner were ASA sanctioned. And I believe he talked about the four being just the first of all 32 of the fields to be converted to turf infields.

Funniest part to watch was the catchers reaching for the dirt out of habit...
