leaving a team this late in the game??

After reading a lot of my posts, I came off as a really bitter parent. I'm a very disappointed parent. However, it was my fault. I did not check this organization out like I should have. I didn't ask the right questions. I guess being new to it I just assumed travel teams are all basically had the same goals. My dd loved the girls she played with. She liked all her coaches. It's just that while we were practicing pitching everyday, pop flys, and ground balls everyday in our backyard the other girls and coaches were going about their week of daily life. She got plenty of playing time in right field and batted in every game. She did not see the rubber because the catcher couldn't catch her change ups, screwballs, drop balls, or her 2 off speed pitches. I am a disgruntled parent. BUT, the upside is it's over and she met a lot of very nice, funny people. We will be going to several try outs of which I am sure she will be picked up. However, I will ask a lot more questions.

softball9295 you're not alone. Maybe we can all meet in a softball parent anger management class. Before >:( After ;D

I know you're disgruntled softball9295 but I really doubt that the reason a pitcher with 6 pitches doesn't see rubber is because the catcher can't catch her. If she truly has all those pitches and can throw them for strikes, a good coach will find someone who can catch her.

Ringer the key there is a good coach not just a really nice coach. If a catcher doesn't set up right or close enough to the plate she can make a good pitcher look horrible by not catching the ball. There is a huge difference in catching a fastball straight down the pike or on the corners than there is catching a ball with movement. It sounds like the team doesn't have another pitcher with movement so the catcher wouldn't have the slightest idea what to expect when a screwball is coming at her. The catcher compliments the pitcher and if she is letting balls that would be strikes if she caught them get past her (therefore allowing bases to be stole) then the pitcher appears incompetent. Yes a good coach would see that but this coach seems to fear change. Leaving players who make error after error after error in their starting positions only to lose game after game. I feel for this mother and her situation. I will give her much credit. She stuck it out through her commitment but learned a valuable lesson, ask before you leap into a whole new world. Not everything is as good as it should and could be.

Thank you Rhino. I just wish my daughter knew as much as me. JK she tries but she is just learning how to catch and set up and when she is set up right it makes big difference. One of coaches doesn't give her the signs her gives them to the pitcher and boy does that get messy sometimes.

He's a nice coach. She does throw 6 pitches. Fastball, Change up, screwball, drop ball, off speed, & an off speed drop. She does throw the occassional wild pitch but the majority of the time they are strikes. She was not the fastest fastball pitcher on the team. The coach used her for 90% of the games.

I have so totally hijacked this thread. Sorry! Carry on.....

lloks like there are allot of opinions on this subject. There are things that happen in life and in softball but you can't just write them off as right or wrong. We are trying to make black and white out of what appears to be a gray area. A majority of parents, players and coaches are happy with thier current situations but that does not mean that there are not circumstances to leave an organization.

I read in this post where a parent voiced their concern and a coach let that player go that read it. Is it ok with the posters to do this but not to leave an unhealthy situation. There are plenty of players that are given a pusheed off of teams by a changing of circumastances. I want to at least challenge posters to the opposite side of this situation.

softballsuporter you may have your facts a little off on your post above. I know what you may have read but trust me when I tell you the player in question was not let go because of anything that was posted on the OFC. That had NOTHING to do with it. Simply not true and I have no probelm at all saying that. The parent in question was told amoung many other things that they have appeared unhappy for some time and that it was clear in some of the posts that they had made on the OFC. That is a long ways away from "a player was removed because of something that was posted on the OFC" Again simply not the case. We would never try to tell someone what to post or not post, this is a free country and a free forumn to share ideas and discuss things.

This is not the place to air such laundry and I will not be part of it, but I could not let that inaccuracy go by without a clarification. ?

I am not trying to make accusations or accuse anyone of anything. But I am trying to get some input on the other side of this debate.

Example: Your dd plays on a team with 11 girls and the coach tells you that unless there are injuries the team is finished recruiting. Your dds team does not do as well as the coach thinks it should but they are still competitive. Your dd is sharing playing time, keeping a good attitude and the coach brings in one or two players and moves the ahead on the depth chart. Now your dd is playing little to no innings and you and your dd show up to 2 tournaments and just watch. There are senarios like this and I am not pointing fingers at anyone but I would like to see some honest responces to this example. What do you do if you talk to the coach and this becomes a pattern. Is it now best to keep your dd on this team? Thanks in advance.

You start with 11 then you add 2 that gives you somewhere between ( PI!!! and Really PI!!!!) if I were that parent. Just my thought. Since everyone else has a thought. TO MANY GIRLS. 13?? only in case of an injury or a really big tourney should you carry that many. Playing time will be an issue I promise ;)

The most I would ever carry on a roster is 12. I had twelve at one point this year and one was told when she joined that she was behind and would get little time, eventually they moved on and I wished them well. Then I had another one that was hardly ever on time and seldom gave 100% when she was. This player could have easily been one of my top four or five on the team if she was on time, did'nt miss practice ( especially because they were eating dinner and was going to be late anyway ) and did I mention never a phone call or returned message. I never knew when she was going to show up so it was hard to start her over others that came to practice and games on time. I asked this player to remove her stuff from the dugout after her dad and myself had a brief conversation at a tournament. I wished her well on the way out and told her it was not all her fault, after all a 12 year old cannot drive her self to practices and games. As a coach, does anybody think that I am in the wrong or should I have tried a different approach? Anyway I am now down to ten players that get along and love the game and none of them mind a break from time to time. I know as a coach that 10 players, who are dedicated to the game, is plenty and we are having a wonderful year. Our record is now 66-31-2 with two tourney wins, four runner ups, two thirds, two fourths and two sixth place finishes. We look to do well in Beavercreek this weekend and head to Panama City Beach, Florida next weekend for the USFA "A" World Series where we should do well also and have great fun as a team.

Goodluck to all,
Ohio Heat Fury 12u

Julie,
Good Luck!!!
I agree with the number 10. commitment has to be top priority. Too many others think the magic number is 12. I don't!!

Coach Paul,
Enjoy the heat in Panama City....We went down a couple years ago for the USFA World Series, and the heat was absolutely unbearable.
