Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Mandatory Mask..Coaches or Parents Decision?

OK - we've had posts saying DD wears a mask, and some discussion about who is responsible for the decision...

Maybe this could qualify for a poll, but here's the question:

If you require your DD to wear a fielder mask, it's because:

a.) I always have required her to wear a mask since she started playing.
b.) The bats/balls are the main reason
c.) I don't trust her fielding abilities
d.) Other: __________________________

a. and its simply a part of her uniform. Pitching and corners. Mask on. Outfield. Mask off. We've never even discussed it.

I will throw in a drill that makes me wonder why you would do it? People stand in front of a hitter and throw soup beans at the hitter. Have you seen anyone get hit in the face doing this? Yes I have and she had a welt under her right eye! If a worker was required to do this OHSAS would fine them for putting your employees at risk because they are not using safety glasses.

If you can not hit a soup bean with a softball bat you are already in trouble in my opinion.

Even a whiffle ball can take an eye out.

Remember you must be able to hit the ball in about the blink of eye and your reaction time better be perfect.

We have used popcorn kernels for years and years - and I DO wear glasses. For saftey reasons of course........ Those things hurt

Wow is that all you got in response to the issue, which is safety? It took until page 15 until someone noticed this, and I was wondering who was going to take the first dig. Actually, if I need to explain, this picture is three years old and we (all the pitchers' parents) bought masks after this tournament. She has worn it since, both for travel ball and for school ball. I do walk the walk. ;)

:lmao::lmao: What I "got" was a poster that screams "safety" and "mandatory" yet has a pic of their kid pitching without a mask. Then, to try to explain themself, says the pic was from 3 years ago (I guess safety was not much of an issue back then) and it just so happens that face protection was purchased right after that tourney. Why didn't you just use the excuse that your kid was the CF and not the pitcher......:D

By the way, your page 15 was my page 3.

Page numbers will be different depending on the setting a person uses. You can pick from 5, 10, 20, 30 or 40 posts per page. He must have it at 5.

But posting about his pic wasn't your first response to the issue. If he had only bothered to read the 15 pages. I can understand not wanting to but then don't make a comment about someone first response if you don't know if that is it. Just saying.

And as far as me spending time on here, I'm self employed and my boss is very cool about it. :)

The answer to the original question is both because coaches as well as parents can make the mask mandatory. In summer ball, if you don't like the coach's decision you can play for a different team. In high school ball, I doubt they can make it mandatory without the risk of a legal battle. I think my dd would skip hs season if she was forced to pitch with a mask.

Any individual be it a parent, coach, or league president, can make these masks mandatory, even a high school AD

Oh and I never once said it should be mandatory across the board. Just sharing some of the experiences I have seen or know about first hand to offer food for thought to all the folks out there. I have mixed feelings on mandating the mask for others, but we do require it on OUR team.

You're right...my apologies. The only thing you said was that you wished they would mandate it.

LETTER TO ALL

I as manager of our 14u team, has had a mandatory rule since they were 10u, that 3rd and pitchers will wear a mask. I will have someone that has never played either postion play it before allowing a girl play the postion with out one. Thats my rule and mine alone and I stick by it.

I love everyone of these girls and think of each and everyone of them as my Daughters. I would not want to bear the pain for the rest of my life, for allowing one of MY GIRLS to be damaged for life, or to ruin the beautiful little faces beacause of some macho tuffness mentality (that to many coaches and parents have).

And if someone does not like it, to bad, its MY TEAM and MY GIRLS...

There would be no legal battle. I decide the rules of my team related to safety. I would provide the mask if necessary. No discrimination.

Alright - playing the Devil's advocate here.

There is no argument from me that the fielder's mask is a great safety device, and protects any player who wears it. I think that point has been well established.

But now, let's get to the meat. Are the parents/coaches who feel that making masks mandatory (or who already require them for their teams) STILL using the highest rated "legal" bats available? Granted, the bats are "approved" and "legal for use", but so aren't many other things we use around our kids. There is no law saying you can't have 10 people smoking Lucky Strikes in your 6 week old infant's room, but do you think that's prudent - or even healthy for your baby? Just because the bat is "approved", do you also think it's "safe" for kids?

Yes, this may sound extreme - but here's the analogy that comes to mind:

Requiring fielder's masks WITHOUT requiring restrictions on the bats and balls is no different to me than putting a gas mask on that baby's face so those 10 people can continue smoking their Lucky Strikes.

Tell me I'm wrong?

Sammy, you're not wrong. Multiple people smoking Lucky Strikes in an infants bedroom is optional. It is recommended against so by doctors but the ability to smoke in the infants bedroom is not madated by the doctor or the law. It can however be mandated by the infants' parents....in other words it is the parents decision. Many people will still not get it.....
