Safety Concerns in high temperatures

Are any TD's considering schedule changes or postponing tourneys due to the 100+ temperatures expected this weekend?

I would say definitely not. If you hydrate properly, take the proper cooling off measures, and don't overwork any one player, they should be fine. Think about it, as kids, we ran all over God's green earth all day all summer long and we were just fine.

If I were still running tournaments, I would definitely consider do a split schedule of early morning and late afternoon games -- because we have lights we could do this. That decision would also include reducing game times, forecasted weather, team travel plans and some consultation with teams. I used to run small events so this would be much easier for me, but if you have some large tournament or showcase going on, then you have a completely different set of circumstances to consider. I'm glad I am not in the position of having to decide.

Girls can handle it. Like Crystle said, hydrate and rest between games. They should be hydrating days before tournament. Now some of the coaches I worry about. HA. I always feel sorry for the ones that have to warm up the girls before the game. Smart head coaches always have to "work on the line up" and let the assistants do the warm ups. haha. I sit in the shade with a cool drink and watch.

Need Ice companies to set up Ice machines to help keep the coolers cold, can't let the beer get warm.

Agree - like Crystle said - just go out and play. Same goes for warmups before the game - do not cut short or alter your preparation. Kids are pampered today - if they become accustom to the outdoors and heat they will be better acclimated - not to mention the hydration that starts well before game - not right before or during the game - because it is too late then.......

We are playing in findlay this weekend and we were just contacted by our coach that the TD is changing the schedule for pool play. I don't have the info yet but it sounds like they are rescheduling fridays games to saturday. To me that doesn't make much sense. Why play more times during a just as hot day instead of spreading the games out and playing more days but less times. Moving the games to saturday will give the girls less recoup time between games Hopefully they are doing as mentioned above and moving games to early in the day and later in the evening avoiding the worst of the day.

I have 1 player that im most concerned with, its my catcher, we have 1 stud and no one else comes close. She will have a tough time with gear on 3 games in 100 degree weather.

Stud or no stud, I wouldn't expect a girl to catch 3 games on the same day in high temperatures. If you're a travel team, you should be deeper than just 1 pitcher/catcher.

I would split my games (2-3 innings each) between 2 or more catchers and monitor pitchers from inning to inning.

If a girl is both a pitcher and catcher, pick one or the other position to use her.

Was in Ky last weekend where temps hovered around 104. Of the 20+ teams I seen only one girl get sick, and this was due to allergies according to parents. Hydrate, drink plenty of water before game time. Ice cubes on cooling points on the body in-between innings & while in the dugout. And finally, keep a cooler of cold water w/rags.

Hydrate before playing.....Water, Gatorades, no iced teas like I drink..... ;)

Have a rag cooler, keep the girls shaded, frozen fruits, no milkshakes!

Playing in Findlay also this weekend. Games are at noon and 8 pm on Friday, so girls have plenty of rest time in between. Crossing my fingers they don't change anything and bringing plenty of water.

It's always the plan but my DD has caught 3 games in high temps and it didn't faze her. She prefers it hot.

While I would agree that with the right preparations and precautions that most girls should be fine, the facts are that not everyone will do the right things and not everyone's body will react the same way. Temperatures and humidity of this level should NOT be taken lightly, and we all need to be on the lookout for players, coaches, umpires and family members who may start showing signs of heat illness.

I agree. I have told all my girls to hydrate multiple days before we play...last weekend was very HOT at OFC Heatin it up but we all were good. This weekend will be similar. Keep an eye on your kids that is the first priority as a coach...child safety. I just asked my DD if I should pitch another pitcher this weekend in one of the games and she looked at me and said..and I quote "do you want to lose"....If you knew my DD you would know she lacks confidence so this was actually a great thing for me to hear and a step in the right direction for her. So I will monitor her and let her go as long as she feels she can. She is good about being honest with me about the way she feels out there.

Um I really hope the parent of the other pitcher doesn't read this on the OFC as it really comes off as daddy ball at it's finest
