[Softball] Hawks Softball Earns Shutout, Split with Spirit

SANTEE, Calif. — The SDC softball team earned their first shutout of the season en route to a split with Ottawa-Arizona on Friday.


The Hawks won Game 1 6-0 before falling 8-4 in the second. The split gives SDC a 10-20 record on the season. The Spirit is now 8-32 overall.


SDC grabbed three runs in the early going of Game 1. Jordan Neal reached on a fielding error in the bottom of the first but the error scored two to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Kayla Mack tripled in the next at-bat scoring Neal for the third run of the inning.


Kaylyn Rubalcava doubled to left field scoring Neal for her second run of the game. The Hawks added two more runs in the fourth. Samantha Campos singled to right center scoring Angelina Savoldi. Neal capped the scoring in the game with a sac fly to center.


Emily McMath earned her first collegiate shutout. She threw seven innings allowing eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts.


The Spirit scored first in Game 2 off a single to right field. Victoria Harris cut the Hawks' deficit in half with an RBI single to right scoring Rubalcava.


Ottawa would later score six unanswered runs to grow an 8-1 lead before the Hawks would attempt a late comeback.


Savoldi started the scoring with an RBI single through the right side scoring Mack. Harris later drew a bases-loaded walk to get the Hawks to 8-3. Samantha Campos grounded out with the bases loaded but scored Rubalcava for the game's last run.


The Hawks will take on Vanguard on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Santee Sportsplex.
