How many players weren't invited to join the team? I didn't say it never works out, just that it can save you from wasting your time at a tryout that could be better spent at another one. Definitely a case of YMMV...

I didn't mean to come off wrong and I agreed that asking first was a good idea.

We sent several emails out initially as well. I'd say just about every coach replied quickly asking about dd's background and positions played. I would give them the run down on my dd but it seems when I hit them back about what specific positions they were looking for, the correspondences hit a dead end. After 4 or 5 of these, I stopped asking and we took our chances just showing up.

As far as the number of girls not getting the nod, I only know that there were 18 girls at the first session. I have no idea how many showed up for the other sessions and they took 11 girls.

BTW......I'm still a rookie at this. What does YMMV stand for?

I think teams have to watch about saying which positions they are looking for because a girl who has never played SS, could be one of the best if given a chance......could be better than the stud currently holding the position. I think every practice each girl should be reviewed for a potential change in position. And I think all players should be able to play just about every position on the field, it will make them very valuable to any team.

YMMV = Your mileage may vary. Commonly used to say not all results will be the same.

You say they took 11 girls - was this a new team? I'd only consider a new team to be a top team if the coaches were well known from having a stellar track record of success.

Our team is good, but not a top team. We had so many girls (40+) show up last year for 2-3 spots that the returning players didn't participate. I can't imagine dealing with considerably more players that would show up for a top team's try out if they didn't prescreen them.

I assume your initial emails also asked what positions they were looking to fill. It's a red flag if the coach avoids the question and/or doesn't respond, especially after you provided your DD's softball resume. Ultimately, the lack of response is a pretty good indicator they're either not interested in the player or that coach has flaws that will make playing on their team problematic.
