When it comes to fastpitch, what is the one rule (any association) that you would change?

Since my DD is a 14u pitcher I would say everyone has to use wood bats..LOL:lmao:. Joking!

In all seriousness, I would say all associations need to standardize the pitching distance for each age group and stick with it...40' or 43' doesn't matter but switching back and forth every weekend is a little crazy.

I would love to see the dropped 3rd strike rule fade into oblivion.

I think the worst rule in softball and baseball is when a runner is hit by a batted ball, the batter gets credited with a hit. To me, that is the absolute dumbest rule in the sport. If an out is made, then the batter should not get credit for a hit period.
That's mine for a rule change.

The Look Back Rule could be just a dead ball, instead of a dead ball and an out. That would still have the same effect of stopping time-wasting cat and mouse games with the pitcher, which was the original intent of the rule, but prevent some of the controversy when a runner is called out on a marginal violation.

High school softball - jewelry. Umpires have more important things to do than be jewelry police.

OK, what is the look back rule? Don't make fun of me...I have no idea what that is.

The look-back rule refers to the requirement that a runner on base not "dance around" while the pitcher is inside the circle. For example, when a batter gets a hit and rounds first base, if the pitcher is in possession of the ball within the circle, the runner must either advance towards second base or immediately return to first. She cannot juke back and forth in order to draw a throw. If the runner continues to change direction towards first, then second, the umpire may call her out. Likewise if she stops between bases waiting for the pitcher to throw to a fielder, as sometimes happens between pitches, and the pitcher is in possession of the ball within the circle, the runner may be called out by the umpire

If there's no out and only a dead ball, then there is no real penalty.

Age cutoff moved to May or even June 1st. Should kids pushing 15 1/2 be playing 14u?

obstuction/interference... drop one or the other terms and just refer to it as offensive or defensive ___________

No game should be played with less than a 100 minute time limit.

Guess i cant pick just one. :)

Having to appeal runners leaving base early on caught fly balls ... if they leave early, call them out!

Other than the runner who violates the rule stopping any possible advance of other runners. So breaking the rule could hurt your own team.

But even if this was changed, I imagine that you'd still have most of the same arguments about wheter the runner violated the rule or not. You just wouldn't have an out, which is a more severe penalty than just halting all of the runners.

Amen... why not have coaches appeal an illegal pitch, or runner leaving early on a steal attempt - if you have to appeal a runner leaving early on a fly ball (of course the game will take 6 hours to play because coaches would appeal an illegal pitch every 3rd one.)... umpire should just have to make the call on the tag .. no appeal.

NCAA had an interesting proposal in their meetings last month. They kicked around a rule change involving a runner leaving base early on a pitch (before ball leaves pitcher's hand).

Instead of a dead ball, it would be a delayed dead ball. Then, at the of the play, the defensive coach would have the option of enforcing the leaving early penalty (runner out) or taking the result of the play.

So batter could hit into a double play, or a runner who didn't violate the rule could be thrown out at the plate, and the defense could let that play stand.

This change was not adopted, but it was interesting that they had even considered something like that.

Eliminate the DP / Flex rule ... I think .. how do others think about this rule? We use it a little, always seems to get me in trouble.

I would institute the same line-up rules that are consitant throughout all associations, NSA,ASA,and USSSA.
